RICHARD (LLOYD) SMITH September 23, 1917 - Gladstone, MB April 5, 2014 - Calgary, Alberta It is with deep sadness the family of Lloyd Smith announces his passing at the Carewest Colonel Belcher facility in Calgary on April 5, 2014. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 66 years, Lillian (nee O'Dowd), his children, Judie Laird, David (Pauline) Smith, Robert (Barbara) Smith, Arlene (Mike) Pollock, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His passing marks the end of a generation for the Smith family, which included his cousin, best friend and blood brother, Jack Broadfoot, with whom he shared a lifelong bond of friendship. Lloyd was born and raised on the family farm in Gladstone, MB, the youngest of six children born to David and Mary Smith. Upon completing his education, he taught school for four years prior to joining the RAF in 1941 as a navigator. He did a tour with 48 Squadron flying Hudson aircraft and later with 422 Squadron (RCAF) on the Sunderland out of Northern Ireland. Following the war, Lloyd began a 32-year career in aircraft routing with Air Canada in Winnipeg, transferring in 1951 to Toronto where the family settled in Milton, ON. In 1965, Lloyd was transferred to Montreal and the family settled in Dollard des Ormeaux on the West Island. Poet, teacher, veteran, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, he was a man of quiet excellence and gentle, good nature who preferred his dessert before the main course! When he retired in 1979, it was back to Winnipeg for Lloyd and Lil where they were able to reconnect with their families after many years in the east. Lloyd enjoyed curling and always found a team, sometimes two, in every place he lived. Eventually, it was time to move closer to their children, three of whom lived in Alberta and in 2002, they moved to Sundre, AB, where they remained until Lloyd's declining health made a move to the Colonel Belcher, his final stop. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Colonel Belcher for the loving care Dad received over the past 10 months. Dad was an honourable man, his word was his bond. Above all, he would want to be remembered as a gentleman. Rest in peace, dear Dad, we will miss you. A private family service will be held at a later date. Heartland Funeral Services Ltd. Sundre entrusted with arrangements. Telephone 403-638-4393.
