GARVIN EDWARD CARRUTHERS April 21, 1950 - April 12, 2014 It is with deep sadness we announce the death of Garvin Edward Carruthers. After battling cancer for several months Garvin passed suddenly but peacefully at Steinbach Bethesda Hospital on April 12, 2014 at the age of 63, with his family at his side. Garvin is predeceased by his parents Edward and Vivian (nee Gunnarson). He will be sadly missed by his wife Maureen (nee Fitzpatrick) married August 12, 1972, his son Aaron and his daughter Dyani (Rick), all of whom he loved dearly. Garvin was very proud of his children. He will also be deeply missed by his brothers and sisters Myra (Vic), Ken, Alvin, Norman, Chris (Charlane) and Ebba (Ken). Garvin leaves behind a very large and loving family. Garvin was born and raised in Winnipeg but spent much of his life in the Riding Mountain and Clear lake area with his family and grandparents Sven and Ebba Gunnarson. He loved animals, the outdoors and the simple things in life. In 1977 he moved his family to Anola to be close to nature and have many pets. He built his first house there himself with the help of friends and his brothers. Garvin loved riding his motorcycle as a younger man, and although family and the toils of life kept him off it for some years, in retirement he was able to rekindle this passion and freedom. He was also able to rekindle many relationships with longtime friends, including Todd and Marianne, Art and Rhonda and Ian and Debbie among others. These friends were very dear to him. We would like to thank Dr. Vendramelli and the staff at Bethesda Hospital, Jimmy at the Health Sciences Centre, Robert at CancerCare, Dr. Lyn and Dr. Eschen. Special thanks to Denis, Mariann and John Fitzpatrick, and Jeff Livingstone for all their help and support. The family also acknowledges the support and friendship of Boyd, Cari, and the St. Genevieve coffee gang. A simple reception will be held on Garvin's birthday, Monday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway in Winnipeg. Memorial Contributions can be made to the Salvation Army; Garvin's favourite charity because they helped him at a time of need.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Dad, you would've loved seeing everyone who came out to support us and honour your life yesterday. I wish you could have been there to celebrate with your family and friends, but I know you were there in spirit. You are loved and greatly missed. My dad was the kind of man who could be large and intimidating, but he was also the type of man who ran into highway traffic in the dark of night to try and save a box of puppies from being run over after being left to die. He had struggles in his life but he was always a steadfast support for my brother and I. There was a time when he was quick to anger but his enduring character was of love and friendship. Dad, you are my best friend, my greatest love and my life will always be a little empty without you. Xo - Posted by: Dyani Carruthers (Daughter) on: Apr 22, 2014

  • My words of condolence seem so weak when I try to speak of such a strong man. Always quick to smile, quick to laugh and quick with a joke. Thanks for enriching our lives, Garv. I extend my deepest prayers of sympathy to his family and friends. Rest in peace, bud! - Posted by: Steve Channing (School mate and friend) on: Apr 19, 2014

  • Maureen Garvin, along with other dear friends, met often when we were all first married. Grand Beach and gatherings at each of our homes to celebrate or just be together. Great times! He always called me Dubby, from the first time we met at the Courts of St. James in our late teens. He always cared deeply for his friends. Thanks Garvin - you will live on in the hearts of all of us who love you. - Posted by: Debby and Ian Orr (friends) on: Apr 19, 2014
