Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPATRICIA FERN HOUSTON (nee KELLY) It is with great sadness, the family announces the death of Patricia Fern Houston. On April 5, 2014 at Lions Personal Care Centre, Fern passed away at the age of 88 years. Fern was born, raised and educated in Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her mother Blanche Esther (Raymer) Kelly; father Martin Patrick Kelly; brothers Raymer Martin Kelly and Stanley Anthon Kelly. Fern leaves to mourn her daughter Esther Ann Houston; son C. Martin Houston; and very special friend Ms. Annette Marie Van Den Bosch. Fern attended St. Mary's Parochial school and St. Mary's Academy. Fern was a member of the following Rebecca Lodges: Miriam #5 where she was Noble Grand, she transferred to Sunshine #43 then became a member of Norwood #42. Later, she became a member of Olive Branch, Historic Rebekah Lodge #1. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant where she was President of Fort Garry #1 and later President of Mandak (Manitoba/North Dakota). She was also a Past Ashayhi of El Hagar Zuanna #132 Ladies of the Orient and Past President of District #2. Fern was a member of the Charleswood Home Board and Past Head Lady. She was also secretary of the Temple Board Association of the Rebekah and Oddfellows. Following that she was representative on said Board for Sunshine #43. Her working years were mostly with Chartered Accountants: Dunwoody, Saul, Smith and Co., Hare, Gork, Water, Thorne, Gunn, Helliwell/Christianson/Laventrol and Horwath. Leaving them, she worked for Dearborn Chemical and the last 12 years of her career was at the Manitoba Government, Department of Natural Resources Forestry Branch, retiring in 1993. After retirement, Fern became a volunteer with Age and Opportunity for just over nine years, then as a member of CNIB for 10 years, reading to a gentleman who became a great friend, Bruce Towes. After moving to Lions Place in 1999 she served on Council for two years then became President of the President's Council. Fern became a member of the Lions Club of Winnipeg and also a member of the Lions Housing Centres. Funeral service 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2014 at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, with interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Manitoba Developmental Center Resident's Benefit Fund, Box 1190, Portage La Prairie, MB R1N 3C6 or a charity of your choice.
