WILLIAM (BILL) HOUSTON
Born: Jan 04, 1942
Date of Passing: Apr 19, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM (BILL) HOUSTON Surrounded by his loving family, Dad passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the age of 72. Dad was predeceased by parents, William and Alice Houston, his first love Margaret and his last love Diane. Dad is lovingly remembered by his children Kimberly, Donald (Kit), Christie (Kyle), Kelly; seven grandchildren, Meg, Blake, Sarah, Ashley, Liam, Emma, Ethan; one great-grandchild Will. Dad will also be in the hearts of his sisters, Joan (Bob), Carole (Doug) and their families and sister-in-law, Anne and family. Finally he leaves to mourn, Don Phillips (Shirley), his best friend of 41 years who he considered to be like a brother. As Dad told it, he was brought into this world January 4, 1942 on a "kitchen table" in Morris, Manitoba. The son of an army officer, he spent his early years growing up in various places throughout Canada and the US, finally settling in Winnipeg where he pursued his education and met his first love, Marg. Around the same time, Dad started his career in the meat business with Swifts. After tragically losing his first wife, Dad carried on raising his children and establishing his career ending up at East West Packers were he met the last love of his life, Diane. Dad met his life long friend Don Phillips while working at East West Packers and with the wonderful partnership they built, Dad and Don opened Preferred Meats together in 1991. Over the years, the most enduring passion in his life was family and it was never more evident than when he travelled, whether it be to the Caribbean or to his cottage at Longbow Lake. Dad's vision to create a meeting place for everything "family" lives in the cottage on Kimberley Road and the times spent there in the summer with the family are among the most cherished memories. When the snow fell, Dad was drawn to a hot destination where the beach, the pool and the swim up bar had a place with his name on it. He always loved being the first one down to the pool to make sure there was en ough loungers for the whole Houston Clan to be together and comfortable. Dad was very actively involved in all of our lives and loved playing with the grandkids no matter where we were. Never wanting or seeking to be the centre of attention it invariably happened as people were naturally drawn to him. Dad taught us all what the true priorities are in life, family, friends, integrity and respect. He frequently quoted Will Rogers "I never met a man I didn't like." Through the last few days we have all received kinds words that have described Dad....genuine, unique, one of a kind, incredible, larger than life....shows how much our Dad meant to so many people and what an impact he had on the world. Now he can be free of the worries and have his furry friend Rowdie back at his feet again. A Celebration of Bill's Life Reception will be held at The Norwood Hotel, 112 Marion St, on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Thank you to the St. Boniface Hospital Emergency Department, ACF Clinic and CancerCare Manitoba. Special thanks to Dr. Andrew MacDiarmid, Dr. Valerie Gordon, Caregivers Andrew and Christina, Paramedics Kristin and Brigitte and the W.F.P.S. First Responders. A very warm and special thank you to Dr. Kim Wiebe. In lieu of flowers, in Dad's memory donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Ave. We love you Dad! You will be deeply missed! It is 5 o'clock somewhere!

After a career of 34 years in sales at Canada Packers, I first met Bill when He and Don Phillips hired me in sales at Preferred Meats, where I worked for 12 years before retiring. Both of us being in the same business for so long, we always had many people and stories to reminisce about and even though we didn't hang out together after work, we shared many personal family and life experiences over the years, becoming very good friends. Bill was very intelligent, patient and always had a very calming effect on any crisis, no matter what. On behalf of my wife Lorraine, and myself, our prayers and thoughts are with all the Houston Family and friends. I will miss Bill's lighthearted teasing and memories of him will never be forgotten. - Posted by: Dennis Bayko (Friend and Former Employee) on: Apr 24, 2014

So sad to learn of you Dad/brother's passing. Our thoughts go out to you Kim, Don, Joan and Carole. Our memories started with Bill and myself sharing carpools to University in 1962. We shared many good times over the years after university as well. Since we left Winnipeg in 1996 our meetings were very few, however, I will remember Bill (your Dad) for his sense of humour, his leadership qualities (as Senior Stick at St. Johns College) and his loyalty to friends and family. Met Bill for the first time when he was sitting at a desk in the old Presswood Pork plant on Maybank in Toronto with Barry Meher, Trading Pork Cuts for Swifts. All my sympathies to all of Bill's family. I am sorry that Bill and I never kept in touch after I moved away from Winnipeg, but I have great childhood memories of "cousin time" together, especially our Christmas dinners and playing with Taffy, the Houston family's lovely golden spaniel. Bill (and his sisters) were always so kind and friendly to the "little cousin" -- which was me. I know he'll be much missed by many! - Posted by: Barb McLintock (Bill's cousin ) on: Apr 22, 2014
