JOSEPH R. BOBYCHUK July 1, 1930 - April 28, 2014 After a long, courageous battle with cancer, Joe passed away at home with his beloved wife of almost 54 years (May 7), Kathy, by his side. He is also survived by his only son, Wayne; sisters-in-law, Helen Weddle, Idaho and Mary Bobychuk, Winnipeg; brother-in-law, George Kosowan (Helen), Saskatchewan; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; special friends, Lil, Bob and Bruce Mazur, and Barb Melillo and family, as well as a long list of friends throughout North America. He was predeceased by his father Ignatius (1989), his mother Rose (1995), and brother Russell (2002). Joe was born and raised in Winnipeg's North End and attended Lord Nelson High School. After high school, Joe went to work at a number of "starter" jobs, including Eaton's and Dominion Bridge before finding his true calling working for Drewry's Brewery/Carling O'Keefe Brewery (Redwood/Main) from 1953 until his retirement in 1990. He then became a member of the very exclusive "free beer for life" club which was negotiated when Carling's was amalgamated with what is now known as Molson's. To the remaining members of the club, Dad would have said Cheers. While attending a social in 1958 Joe met the love of his life, Kathy, and they were married in 1960. They were inseparable and did everything together. Whether working on one of Joe's many projects or travelling around North America going to garage sales and flea markets. One of the biggest projects they undertook started in 1966 when they purchased a cottage in Caddy Lake, MB. They spent every free moment there, making the cottage their home away from home. That continued until Joe became too ill to travel to the lake, but his mark will be forever remembered by all of the lake family. Joe had numerous hobbies and was known as "Mr. Fix It". He could take anything old and make it new again. He passed on his passion to his son who will carry on the traditions in the workshop. One of Joe's greatest passions was horology and he was a 20 year member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. In accordance to his wishes, cremation has taken place. No service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted in Joe's name at CancerCare Manitoba, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB. The family would like to thank all of the wonderful staff that took such good care of Joe over the past year. With special thanks to the Palliative Care team and Seven Oaks District Home Care. Rest in peace Dad. We know you'll be raising a pint with your best friend Frank.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I am deeply saddened to hear of Uncle Joe's passing. I will always remember his smile, the fond memories at Caddy Lake, the many Easter and Christmas dinners we shared as a family, the weddings and positive family gatherings. It seems so surreal and he will be greatly missed by us. He was the only uncle I had on my Dad's side and I will have fond memories of him and the pictures we have! I will forever miss him. All my love to Aunt Kathy and Wayne - Posted by: Carla Bobychuk (Niece ) on: May 02, 2014

  • Our hearts are heavy for the loss of your husband and father. We enjoyed the many stories he shared with us at the cottage. He was a wonderful man and will be sadly missed by all his "lake family". - Posted by: Allison, Trevor, Mitchell and Robyn Feltham (Caddy Lake Friends ) on: May 02, 2014
