Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySAM MINUK It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Sam Minuk on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 in Winnipeg at the age of 82. Predeceased by his parents Mandil and Lily, brothers Bill and Julius, sister Ruth; sisters-in-law Lola and Marion, brothers-in-law Hy Sirkis, Lawrence Racklin and Keppy Steiman; by his mother-in-law Mary Leibl, and father-in-law, Harry Leibl. Loving husband to Ruby, devoted father to Dr. Darrell (Jill), Farley (Alanna), and Rob. Proud Zaida to grandchildren: Amanda, Alex, Megan, Eli, and Samantha. Dedicated brother to his sister Doris Steiman, brother Bert, and sisters-in-law Zena and Esther. Sam was born, June 20, 1931 and grew up on Aberdeen Avenue in an orthodox home. He attended St. John's Tech High School and played on the school's basketball team. In his younger years he was a member of the Hebrew Fraternal Lodge, and was active in their bowling league. At age 18, he started to work in the family business, Minuk's Department Store on Dufferin Avenue. After a property expropriation the store was relocated to Main Street, where it was a fixture for over 30 years. Sam served customers in Yiddish, Ukrainian, Polish, German and he also knew a little Russian. Due to the changes that took place on Main Street he closed Minuk's Store in 1996 and went to work at the Work Boot Factory on Regent Avenue. After selling for over 50 years he finally retired at the age of 72. Sam loved the Ashkenazy Synagogue which was his family synagogue, and until recently attended the morning services every day. Family was number one with Sam. His door was always open. He was close with his siblings and was always there to take them places or pick up something for them. He was a man who never said no. Nothing was too difficult, for he called himself, "Sam the Horse". Driving from one end of the city to the other was his thing, as well as getting, helping, doing, schlepping or shmoozing. He was a devoted husband and father. Ruby was the love of his life and even after 61 years of marriage he still had that special look of love when he saw her. He loved when his family, children and grandchildren were together. He especially loved when his children and grandchildren were at their Gimli summer cottage. Remembering him running to get fresh made cinnamon buns for the grandchildren and playing tennis or gin rummy are wonderful memories. He was a humble man with a huge heart and will be missed so much. The Minuk family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Victoria General Hospital for their kindness and care. Funeral services were at the Chesed Shel Emes, Friday, March 28, 2014, 1:00 p.m. Interment was at the B'nai Abraham Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Rube Helman, Sam Kleiman, Adam Brodsky, Sid Hochman, Gerald Hochman, and Jeff Lieberman. His memory may be honoured through donations from a charity of your choice.

My condolences to the family at the loss of your father and husband. Mr. Minuk looks the same as I remember him in the store on Dufferin. I can almost hear his voice as my parents bargained with him over the price of the rubber boots or the jeans that had 10 oz denin. I was a little girl at the time and my parents farmed in Balmoral and it was fun to go to his store. I went to the store on Main street looking for rubber boots for my own kids many years later and recognized his voice. He remembered the Fox family, new that my mother had passed away and that my brother had taken over the farm. I was truly taken with his appreciation from his old time customers and his memory of them. God bless your family at this time of your great loss. Elaine - Posted by: Elaine Lyons () on: May 03, 2014
