ELIZABETH (ELSIE) CHIMKA It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Elizabeth (Elsie) Chimka on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the age of 86. Elsie leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Darlene Smith (Christopher), as well as Christopher's parents and siblings. Elsie was predeceased by her husband Walter in 2001, and her parents Rosalia and Peter Walchyshyn. Elsie was born in Winnipeg on May 19, 1927 and married Walter on June 30, 1951. She was a vibrant and active person throughout her life. In her early years she worked as a secretary at Eaton's where she met many of her friends. Later she worked as a secretary for a lawyer and an accountant before retiring to enjoy time at the cottage and tending her gardens. She took great pride in her gardens and always planted extra tomato plants to give to her friends. The time she spent at the cottage was always busy with the garden and visiting friends. The barbeque dinners on the deck with family, the dogs and the birds were her most treasured moments. Elsie enjoyed the activities of the Daughters of the Nile and the Khartum Ladies Auxiliary and was always talking about their latest charity work or event. Her husband's Masonic and Shrine units invited her to their events which she enjoyed so much. Thank-you to those groups for taking Mom to their events and keeping her so active. Elsie's other joy was babysitting the poodles the girls' and birds, and was more interested in talking about them than anything else. Aynsley, Sapphire, Heidi and Rosie will miss Grandma'. We would like to thank all of Mom's friends who offered their thoughts and prayers, and those who were able to visit her. A special thanks to the staff of East 3 in Riverview Health Centre and the St. Boniface Palliative Care Community team for their care. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elsie's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada.

  • My condolences to the family. I met Elsie at Daughters of the Nile only a year ago. She made me feel very comfortable being the "new girl" in Nile. I found in the short time I've known her that she was a very kind and caring person. She will be truly missed. Rest in Peace Elsie. - Posted by: Brandy Lee Welbergen (Acquaintance) on: May 04, 2014
