ERVIN ARNOLD MILLER Peacefully on Friday morning May 2, 2014 at age 82, Dad journeyed beyond after a battle with aggressive stomach cancer which had so rapidly taken hold of his body. Dad was born on a farm near Lipton, Saskatchewan (March 16, 1932) having moved with his family during his youth to Manitoba, temporarily settling in Stoney Mountain, then the Prairie Grove area before settling in Winnipeg where he met our mom. Youngest son to Jean and Henry Miller, Dad was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lou, in 2007, after nearly 50 years of marriage. He was predeceased by eldest sister Lil (Gordon, d., Mel, d.) and brother Ernie (Sandra), and is survived by his sister Lenore (Norm, d.). He has one surviving sister-in-law, Shirley (Doug, d.). Grandpa (Papa) will be greatly missed by Craig (Kaley), Tara (Chad), Kristen (Kyle) and one great-grandson Jackson, Melanie (Joel), Kaitlyn, Sarah and Tim along with many nephews and nieces. Dearly loved and missed by his three sons and their families: Greg (Jeanine), Doug (Darcy) and Mark (Deanne). Dad was very active and encouraging in our lives. He always considered his family first. He was a part of the community as a baseball coach and Cub Scout leader. Dad taught us to skate, fish, hit a baseball, water ski, build with wood and work with our hands. He loved playing and spending time with his grandchildren and recently his great-grandchild. Dad hosted Christmas Parties for friends from CN. Dad guided us in building a mini bike which we rode endlessly up and down the old Bergen cut-off. He enjoyed working with wood, metal and even did some brick work. In his later years his artisan side came out and he did projects with stained glass, needle point and marble. Dad was a true handyman and craftsman tackling larger projects like building the cottage at Betula Lake and helping others with homes, cars, landscaping and gardening. Dad retired in 1993 after 30 years as a Pipefitter with CN (Symington). We all enjoyed the family trips and outings whether to the Rocky Mountains, East Coast, USA or camping. Dad and Mom loved berry picking, playing cards, attending auctions, horse races, and curling. Dad was always willing to extend a hand to help others. A celebration of Dad's life will be held at Glen Eden (4477 Main St.) Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Corey Sawatzky officiating. Interment and reception will follow. Viewing will be held 1 hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ervin's memory to the Heart and Stroke or Cancer Research. We would like to extend thanks to the staff at Concordia Hospital (N1) and Kildonan Personal Care Home for his care over the last 5 months. Glen Eden Funeral Home and Cemetery 338-7111

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Both Mary & Irvin were exceptionally kind next door neighbours. They knew how hectic my life was as a full time working single parent and assisted our family in many, many ways. For example: Mary Lou baby sat my children a few times but would not accept any payment for her services. While she was looking after my two children, she folded laundry, washed dishes etc. On one occasion, Mary ran over to assist the children put out a fire on the stove while I had gone to an evening class at U of M. Irvin would mow the lawn or use his snow blower (without my asking) Irvin wall papered my kitchen wall as well. The were both God sent! May their souls rest in peace and may your family find peace and strength to cope with the loss of such wonderful parents. My children and I wish to extend our sincerest and deepest sympathies to Mary Lou and Irvin's children on their loss. Doug, if you remember us, we would love to hear from you. - Posted by: Asfia Sultan (Next door neighbour (from 1986- 1990)) on: Sep 25, 2015
