MARY JOSEPHINE JUREK (nee HOBLEY) November 2, 1924 - May 2, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our loving mother, Mary, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg on Friday, May 2, 2014. Mary is survived by her daughter Gloria Jones; son William (Bill) Jurek; granddaughter Laura Neithercutt, of Victoria, BC and sisters June (Joe) Komadoski and family of Comox, BC, Dorothy Steinkie and family of Pine Falls, MB, plus many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her long-time partner John Alexander; son-in-law Wilfred Jones; grandson Robert Jurek; brothers John Hobley and William (Bill) Hobley, and sister Constance (Connie) Edwards. Mary was a devoted, hard-working mother who operated the cafeteria for many years at the Crescent Creamery, Canadian Publishers, and Universal Printers. However, Mary's first love was gardening and after retiring she couldn't resist returning to work when tempted by A. Paterson Greenhouses. She enjoyed working in the greenhouses for many more years and helping customers select plants for their gardens. Mom always had a green thumb for gardening and a real talent when it came to the arrangement of plants. The beautiful gardens mom nurtured around her home were her pride and joy. Family was most important to mom - she enjoyed cooking and will always be remembered for her wonderful pies. Summer weekends were spent at the trailer at Winnipeg Beach, where she and John relaxed with friends and family. We have many great memories of the weekends spent at the trailer as well as those enjoying other favourite family pastimes such as going to country fairs and having picnics, etc. We could always count on great food and good family discussions - wonderful and "never-to-be-forgotten" times for us as a family! Mom cared deeply for her family and friends and would do anything to help them. She was also a very generous, thoughtful, and caring person who wanted to give back to the community. She and John volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels by delivering meals once a week to shut-ins. Mom also volunteered with the Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board for over 20 years. Mom had a very kind heart. Somehow, despite their busy lives, Mary and John managed to find time to travel. They toured all through Europe many times and even vacationed in Tunisia, but it was Hawaii that they came to love and spent several winters there. When John was no longer able to travel, he insisted that Mary continue travelling with her daughter, Gloria. Mother and daughter made a few more trips to Europe before settling on Hawaii as their favourite winter vacation destination for many years. Mom was always ready to take a holiday, especially to Victoria to visit Bill and her grandchildren. Good times were always had by all. Mom, thank you for your unyielding support and loving presence in our lives. Your memory will live on in our hearts forever. Our thanks to the many staff at the Charleswood Personal Care Home who were a part of mom's life over the past five years. We would also like to thank the emergency room team and staff on Unit 4 - 3rd Floor of Grace Hospital for your respectful care of our mother and for the kindness and compassion you extended to our family. A celebration of Mary's life will take place on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3K 1W3. For those so wishing, memorial donations in Mary's name made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3 or a charity of your choice will be appreciated.
