WALTER (WALLY) GWOZD March 4, 1934 - May 2, 2014 After a short but courageous battle with cancer it is with love and great sadness that Walter's family announces his peaceful passing to be with his Heavenly Father. Grateful for the deep and lasting impact he had on our lives, inspiring each of us to live as fully and joyfully as he did are his wife of almost 54 years, Marie, son Patrick, daughters Andrea (Don) and Celeste (Dwaine), grandchildren, whom he affectionately referred to as his "little darlings" Ashley, Meghan and Matthew Boitson. Also left to cherish his memory are his sister Mary Kohut, sister-in-law Helen Patterson (Gwozd), cousin Kay Kuzyk (Fred) and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbours. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Mary, brother Bill and brother-in-law Joseph Kohut. Wally was born and raised in Portage la Prairie, MB. Soon after graduating high school he followed his childhood dream and joined the R.C.A.F. to become a fighter pilot. He trained in Centrallia, ON in 1953 and was stationed in Baden-Soellingen, Germany with 422 Squadron. from 1954 to 1957 flying the F86 Sabre Jet on NATO Missions. Upon his return to Portage in 1958 he commenced his commercial flying career with Transair. In 1960 he married the love of his life, Marie Krnoski and moved to Winnipeg in 1963 to raise their young family. In order to spend more time with his family Wally became an entrepreneur and formed Alpha Vending. After 10 successful years he sold the business and resumed his passion of flying as chief pilot with Air Manitoba, soaring the open skies with the iconic C46, DC3, Canso (water bombing) and Hawker aircraft to name a few, until his retirement in 1993. Wally was a humble, soft-spoken, patient, young-at-heart, kind gentleman. He will be forever remembered for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humour. He was a very intelligent man, which always made for interesting conversation and a great resource. Who needs Wikipedia? We had Wiki-Wally! As a long-time member of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church he was a man of deep commitment and faith. He enjoyed wine making, cooking and following the stock market for hours at a time. As a member of the Sabre Pilots Association Air Division 422 Squadron, Wally and Marie enjoyed numerous trips across Canada for the biannual SPAADS reunions. For the past 20 years they also looked forward to their winter getaways to Palm Springs where they formed many wonderful and lasting friendships. Family vacations were very special to Wally and he felt fortunate to have that time together, especially with his grandchildren, whom he adored. His family was his life and he will be dearly missed. Many thanks to Fr. Bohdan Lukie for his visits and prayers for Wally and for his genuine concern for the family. Thank you also to Fr. Frank Szadiak for his visits and prayers. The Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave., Winnipeg, MB. Private family interment in Portage la Prairie will follow at a later date. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses and aides at Health Sciences Centre GD-4 and Riverview Health Centre 3E for their compassionate care for Walter. You are all angels doing God's work! In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky Shrine, CancerCare Manitoba or Riverview Health Centre. I want to pass on my heartfelt condolences and sorrow for loss. Your husband was a true professional, never boastful but rather soft spoken and quiet demeanour. He flew through some of the toughest weather conditions, hauling some of most back breaking cargo and never complained or excused himself for more favourable assignments even though he held the title of chief pilot. He simply lead by example. A great person to have known but you and your family already knew. We affectionately called Walter, LODGE, his name in Ukrainian. He was soft-spoken and reserved, yet you knew he was always thinking. If we were joking around, Lodge always had a smile or smirk on his face. He was always on the go and kept up with us even into his late 70s. Along with Minnie (Mary,) we felt like family or long-lost sons with their kindness, openness, and hospitality. The love Lodge had for Minnie carried over to their children and will create a legacy to a thousand generations. We were so blessed to have Lodge as part of our lives. His memories will reside in our hearts and with the family in the days and years ahead. Our peace and comfort is knowing Lodge is with Our Lord in Heaven. Christos Voskres! I was most saddened by Walter's passing. Walter hired me in March '18 on the DC-3. A true professional and a joy to learn from. Patient and thorough. Great stories of his airforce days. Rest Peaceful Wally! Kevin Gray - Posted by: Kevin Gray (Former pilot Illford Riverton/Air Manitoba) on: May 07, 2014

Words are inadequate to express my deepest sympathy to Marie and all your loved ones on the loss of your wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Wally was a true "gentleman" in every sense, and his warm smile will always remain in my mind. May God give you strength! Love, your friend, Esther Weinstein, now of Vancouver. - Posted by: Esther Weinstein (Friend) on: May 07, 2014

Who won at Checkers? It was over 50 years ago, in the early 1960's when I first heard 'Uncle Walter' laugh. His deep laughter was directed at his brother (my father) after I won my Dad at checkers. I clearly remember my father's rebuttal "no, no, I did not let him win!". So my grandfather, (my Uncle Walters' father) said, let me show and teach young 'Billy' how checkers are played. Shortly afterwards I heard for the second time Uncle Walter laughing, though this time it was louder and longer. Yup, 'Gido' was humbled by his grandson Billy at checkers. Uncle Walter stressed he would show and teach his young nephew Billy... as checkers was a pastime Uncle Walter learnt really well. Unfortunately, laughter arrived louder and longer in minutes ... from Gido and my father as uncle Walter, was losing and being beat by his young nephew Billy. Uncle Walter turned at looked at me and said - you are good and very smart - you'll do well. I never forgot that day and the words Uncle Walter said. When my first son was born, 25 years later, I named my son after my Uncle Walter 'Walter William Gwozd'. After my wife shared the name with her Chinese family, the pronouning of 'Walter' unfortunately became watered down to 'Water' so with this feedback a solution had to be found 'right away' while editing the name card. I always thought 'Steve McQueen' in the movie 'The Great Escape' reminded me of my Uncle Walter, so in minutes, my son's name was changed to 'Steve William Gwozd'. I called my Uncle Walter and shared that with him at that time. Now, I suspect my Grandfather (William Gwozd), my father (William Gwozd), and my Uncle Walter Gwozd can find time to play one of their favorite 'long time ago' game of checkers. When I hear loud thunder in storms, I will know it is just them laughing at each other when one wins at Checkers. - Posted by: William P. Gwozd (Nephew) on: May 06, 2014
