BARBARA THELMA CHESS It is with sadness that we announce the death of Barbara Chess, age 80 of Winnipeg, MB, Canada on Thursday, May 1, 2014, peacefully at home. She was predeceased by her husband Morley in 2010. Born in Winnipeg on June 9, 1933 to Cecile and Maurice Rusoff, Barbara grew up in Winnipeg's north end and attended St. John's Tech and the University of Manitoba. Barbara married Morley Chess on November 14, 1954 in Winnipeg, where they raised a family in a strong partnership of 55 years. Barbara was an enthusiastic parent, homemaker and grandmother who deeply loved, and was loved by, her family and many friends. Part of the large extended Rusoff family, she kept in touch with cousins from across the globe and took deep pleasure in attending their celebrations. After raising her children, Barbara worked part-time at Eaton's where she established close friendships that endured until her passing. Barbara took great pleasure from playing in her weekly Maj Jong games and poker nights, her beloved "lunch bunch" and travelling to see her children and grandchildren. She is survived by children Susan Chess of Toronto, Judy Chess of Berkeley, California and her children Erin and Jordan Anderson; Jim Chess and Karyn Glass of Winnipeg and their children Ethan and Rebecca; Laurie and Allan Burg of Toronto and their children Hannah and Nathan; and sister Dorothy Rusoff of Toronto. Barbara was laid to rest on May 4, 2014 at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Erin Anderson, Ethan Chess, Rebecca Chess, Gary Brownstone, Allan Burg, and Hart Greenberg. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Barbara and Morley Chess Memorial Fund, Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. May her memory be a blessing.
