ELIZABETH AGNES MELNYK (nee CHIPURA) "Together for Eternity" On Monday, May 5, 2014, at the age of 74, Mom left us to join her husband and life companion Edward on the beaches of Heaven. Left to forever cherish Mom's memory are her children Larry, Lisa, Tim, and Chris (Tara, Lily); as well as grandchildren Chelsea and Lauren, and faithful companion Kujo. She was predeceased by her husband Edward in 1999. Mom was born in Winnipeg, and was raised in Chatfield, Manitoba, before the family moved to Winnipeg. The oldest of eight children, she was working at the American Consulate when she met Dad, who was attending the University of Manitoba before beginning a career with Upjohn Pharmaceuticals. Originally, they planned on living in Calgary, but with Dad's work keeping him on the road during the week, and an impending family, the decision was made to move back to Winnipeg to be closer to family, and for Dad to change careers to teaching. While raising a family, Mom was involved with all of the kids' activities, including the Richmond Kings Community Centre, where she was honoured with the Woman of the Year award. She also never missed the kids playing hockey, baseball, soccer, figure skating, and dancing. As us kids grew, Dad became involved in OCOD (the Organization for Cooperation in Overseas Development) as a team leader, and many summers were spent in the Caribbean educating their teachers, some years with young Chris in tow. They enjoyed the discovery of new places and cultures, and made plans to continue travel in their retirement. Sadly, however, Dad passed before those travel plans could be fulfilled. As time went, Mom got rekindled with the travel bug, and trekked around the globe, including such highlights as walking on the Great Wall in China, touring the mountains of Machu Picchu, and even landing in a ski plane on a glacier in New Zealand. Travel was a great joy for Mom, but perhaps her greatest joy was in her children and grandchildren - she always created a welcome home for them, and took special pride in watching her grandchildren grow - she was a very proud Grandmother. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in Mary, Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, Winnipeg with Rev. Fr. Gerry Ward presiding. As per Mom's request, a private family Interment will take place at a later date. The family would like to thank all the staff of 4 South ward at Victoria General Hospital for all their kindness and compassion during Mom's illness. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elizabeth and Edward's names may be made to Jocelyn House Hospice, 177 Egerton Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba R2M 2W7. Winnipeg Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204-897-4665, Wojcik's is in care of arrangements. wojciksfuneralchapel.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Larry and Lauren, Sorry to hear of your loss. They live in the hearts they leave behind. - Posted by: sheila hunter (friend) on: May 12, 2014

  • Please accept my condolences to the family who meant the world to Elizabeth. Please know I cry with you. Elizabeth and I shared "warm and special times". We strolled the sunny beaches of the Caribbean, were inspired by sacred experiences during our pilgrimage to Italy with our leader Father Gerry Ward, foraged happily for bargains during our many shopping trips to Fargo and enjoyed creating scrapbooks. Liz was a perfectionist and master. Most special are memories of adventures enjoyed with our with our precious grandchildren. My memories of days with Liz and Ed will be with me forever. Rest in peace my loyal and loving friend. - Posted by: Vicki Brunel (friendwb) on: May 12, 2014

  • I am saddened to learn of Liz's death. The news has prompted me to look at my travel photo albums. I was fortunate to have travelled with Liz to places like South America, Portugal and Greece. What nice memories to see "Me & Liz" in the botanical gardens, in a cable car in Maderia, admiring the dresses purchased for her little grand daughter, shopping for leather goods in the street markets and buying an extra suitcase to hold all the treasures she was taking home, and sharing red wine at dinner at the end of the day. Liz was a nice lady I was happy to call "friend". My most sincere condolences to her family. May all the happy memories you have of her bring you comfort in the days ahead. • Aunty Liz also has an extended family who love her dearly. She was predeceased by her sister's Marliyn (Priestley), and Joanne (Smith). She is survived by her sister's Theresa (West) and Patricia (Newman), and brother David, Thomas and James. Whenever I needed my mom, Pat, I found her with her sister and friend Liz. They were more then just sisters, even though childhood was less then perfect. Sometimes all that you need is love. - Posted by: Jenna Newman (Niece) on: May 10, 2014

  • Auntie Liz welcomed me to the family with open arms. She was such a kind lady who amazed me with her home cooking skills while visiting BC a few years back. My sincere condolences to all of Liz's family from both my self Joanne and Richard Hebert - Posted by: Joanne Hebert (Neice) on: May 10, 2014
