VERONA EMMA ELIZABETH SCHATTNER (nee HADFIELD) Peacefully on May 11, 2014, after a short illness, Verona passed away in her 87th year. She is survived by one son Glen (Anita), two daughters Lynn (Roy) Norton and Lisa (Dianne); five grandchildren Derek, Adam, Sarah, Benjamin and Donald, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Ben in 1995, and her brother Don in 2005. Verona was born on April 22, 1927 in Selkirk, Manitoba. She worked at British American Insurance and Consolidated Motors. Verona was a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Charleswood, and was actively involved in preparing the weekly church bulletins and supervising the church alter guild. Verona was a long time Charleswood resident. They had a huge rural type lot where in the beginning they had chickens, pigs and a small mink operation. Mom and Dad had a showcase of flower beds and a large vegetable garden. Although in later years the gardens had to be fenced off from the increasing deer population. Mom did take some delight in counting all the deer browsing in her yard. Mom was the best baker and always had your favourite dessert for you. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 637 Buckingham Road, with Pastor David Lowe and Pastor Glen Krentz officiating. • Verona Schattner was an inspiration to all who knew her in the church. A terrific role model with a kind gentle hand when it came to instructing on all things Sacred within Altar Guild in Gloria Dei. She had a keen eye for detail and a sparkle in her eye when things done to her liking. She was a very unassuming humble person who delighted in the smallest of gifts and kindnesses. I know that Verona is now preparing the way for us as she always has for when we meet again. God's peace be with her family. She will be missed. - Posted by: Kim Dorn (Friend from Gloria Dei) on: May 15, 2014
