VICTOR AUGUSTUS GUARINO January 4, 1923 - May 3, 2014 Husband of Beverley Bertha (nee Murdie) Guarino, married September 19, 1946. Suddenly but peacefully at the age of 91 years Victor left us to join his parents Rose and Joe, brother Joey, sisters-in-law Ella and Verna, mother-in-law Isabel Fox, and infant son Tracy. Cremation has taken place. Surviving are wife Beverley of Garson, MB; daughters Beverley Caldwell, Calgary, Brenda and Fred Wakeman Lester Beach, son Victor and Sharon Guarino, Winnipeg; grandchildren from Calgary: Kyle (Lydia) Hein, Ryan (Terence) Borgfjord, Chris Caldwell; from Winnipeg: Dean Guarino, Whitney Wakeman, and Wesley Wakeman (Greg Enns), great-grandchildren Blake Guarino, Winnipeg, Zane Victor and Emerson Borgfjord, Calgary, and brother Charles Guarino of Winnipeg. Vic was an athlete, hockey and speedskating in winters, swimming year round at Sherbrook Pool - where someone jumped from the high board landing on dad and breaking his neck. Vic was born at 376 Osborne St. and later moved to 484 Jessie Ave. where he and his brothers grew up. Summers were spent at Grand Beach. Vic and Chuck would meet the trains and help people take their baggage to their cabins. At eight years old he would take his accordion in a wagon to the dance hall and play at dances - three hours for $0.25. Vic won a trip from his paper route on Lake Superior on the SS Harmonic and SS Noronic. He loved the sweet breads but was surprised when his parents told him what they were. Vic and Chuck were lifeguards at Minaki Lodge in the days of big movie stars vacationing there. Later they were lifeguards at Grand Beach, tanned, well muscled, handsome young men. Vic hired on as a fireman, then a brakeman, and later became a conductor on C.N.R. He loved railroading as did his dad. Dad met the love of his life Beverley Murdie (Mom) at Grand Beach They married the next year and started a family. Always thinking of ways to supplement income dad became a denturist and made teeth for three quarters of the town of Rainy River. They called him doc. He was responsible for bringing Studio Girl cosmetics to Canada, they had many girls working for them. Dad made sure he could do it all, so he could sell it. In between he had a doll hospital. Dad and Mom worked so well together, they taught piano and accordion in our home. Then they started a very successful taxidermy business. Dad and Mom showed Great Danes then boxers. Dad showed my Old English Sheepdogs and won numerous times with big Willie - his buddy. Dad was always very active in the dog clubs and shows and became a judge. Dad and Mom were beautiful dancers - Viennese and Strauss waltz. Everyone would stop to watch them dance. Dad and Mom built their cottage at Lester Beach - third one on the lakefront. We went there every summer from 1953 to 1974. Always wonderful times, Dad made pancakes on the barbeque. In 1975 they bought property and decided to move from Transcona to the country. They built their home themselves, every nail and board. Dad had his pool, 20x40, he kept his yard like a park, he taught all the grandchildren to swim. Everyone had such fun and never wanted to go home or to work. It got the nickname, book off ranch. Dad was so happy - there were horses, dogs, cats, and kids. He loved his family and his animal family. Dad was a great cook, turkey was his specialty. Christmas Eve was for everyone who could come - cousins, in-laws, children, grandkids and friends. Before he retired he got to work with his son and that made him so proud. Dad, conductor and Dick, brakeman. Then when Dick retired dad was so happy and proud to celebrate with him. Mom and Dad celebrated 67 years of marriage on September, 19, 2013, he was so proud of his beautiful wife he wanted photos taken and put in the paper. Always a party for her, Mom was Dad's life. He thought of her first and always. His love is still here - although he couldn't stay with mom and us, you can feel his love around us. Dad we know you didn't want to leave us but your heart was so tired. You put up one hell of a fight last summer and you beat it! When all the odds were against you making it through the night, you got well, walked again and came home to your wife, family and dogs with NO oxygen tank! We are all so proud of you dad and will miss you so very much. All our love for Eternity ...your adoring family

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • This may be late but I was unable to write anything previously due to the loss. I feel so fortunate to have had my grandfather (Pop) in my life. I have to say the best times of my youth were spent with him. From him taking my sister to the store and buying us comic books, candy, snacks and VHS movies like terminator!. I remember him saying "just don't tell your mom!"...LOL He wasn't the only father figure that influenced my life but he was definitely the one whom I spent the most time with and always had some new food, book or organic supplement he was trying. I would walk in the door for a visit and he'd say " Kyle , come here I have something I want you to taste!". I'll never forget the 1st time I was on a train when I was a kid and he took me from Winnipeg to Kenora, when when he retired, or how he used to pretend to be monster and chase us around in the pool then do a great big cannonball! The memories and times are the most fulfilling and miss him greatly everyday. I'll never forget - Love you always Pop. - Posted by: Kyle Hein (Grandson) on: Aug 04, 2015

  • Vic was a wonderful brother. We were very close in growing up and shared many memories of our growing up, having cottages next TO EACH OTHER. We WERE TOGETER AS LIFUGARDS in 1942 and had a wonderful year working together. I visited him in Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, when he put up a valiant struggle for life. What more can I say. I thank God for such a wonderful brother. - Posted by: CharleV. Guarino - (Vic's older brother) () on: Jan 20, 2015

  • While growing up I always heard stories from my father and mother of Victor Guarino and my father growing up together and the hockey they played. As well as working the railroad together. So many times my father would refer to your father as his best friend growing up in Fort Rouge. My father passed at a young age (67) but his memories of your father stayed with him and he passed the stories that meant so much to him on to us. I am so sorry to hear of your loss and my prayers are with your family. I think your father and mine will be playing hockey or working on trains in heaven together. My fathers name was Frank Soko - Posted by: Muriel and George Boroskae (father knew him) on: Jun 07, 2014

  • Vic was one of my best childhood memories. Spending time with Bev and Vic at their house on Clare and the glorious summers at Grand Beach and Lester Beach. His amazing breakfasts at the beach and the Christmas Eve dinners we all shared were perfect. I am so sad to know he is not still here but am sure he would tell you his life was full. We love you Uncle Vic. - Posted by: Mikey () on: Jun 07, 2014

  • I was fortunate to spend lots of time with the family up at the cottage every year and in their home in Transcona. It was always cold in the cottage, as we would go up early in the spring. Brenda's Dad would fill up big bottles of hot water to put down at our feet to keep them warm at night. I loved the cottage and I loved being with them. They were always lots of fun and treated me just like their own. It was a big part of my childhood and remembered with fun and lots of love. Mr. Guarino will be missed by many, especially me. Yes, I always called them by Mr. and Mrs., they must have asked me a 100 times to call them Bev and Vic but I just couldn't until I got much older. I was blessed to have Vic in my young life. Missing you Vic. Dodee (Dorothy) xxoo - Posted by: Dorothy Moors Wilson (Brenda their daughters best friend since Grade 4) on: Jun 07, 2014
