MARGARET YEATS (nee HAMILTON) With great sorrow, we wish to announce the passing of our beloved mother, Margaret Yeats most recently of 303 - 125 Portsmouth Blvd., Winnipeg, Manitoba. Margaret passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Grace Hospital after suffering a stroke at the age of 87 years. Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband Russell; her two brothers Jim and Jack, and parents Lily and Walter Hamilton. She is survived by her three loving daughters, Jane Eibner (John Heath) of Victoria, BC; Nancy Eibner (Al Thomson) of Winnipeg; and Linda Eibner (Muhamad) of Winnipeg. She also leaves behind her late brother Jack's children, Jim, John, Neil and Joan Hamilton. On June 6, 1926 Margaret was born in Winnipeg, to Lily and Walter Hamilton, who had moved here from Bradford, England early in the 1900s. She and her two older brothers, Jim and Jack, grew up and went to school in River Heights. After graduating from Kelvin High School, Margaret worked for a number of years at the Great West Life Company. During this time, she met and married Leonard Eibner. Together, Margaret and Len had three daughters, and lived in Vancouver and Montreal. In the early sixties she moved back to Winnipeg with her daughters to be with family and friends. She was a very courageous woman to do this, especially in those days. In 1966 Margaret married her childhood friend, soul mate and sweetheart, G. Russell Yeats, of Winnipeg. Russ predeceased her in 2001. Had she and Russ lived, they would have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on May 14. Margaret was a quiet person but she also greatly enjoyed her friends. She had a quick mind, a ready wit, and she didn't suffer fools. She played bridge, and continued to be well-read and physically active into her mid 80s. A longtime member of the Rady Centre, she also volunteered at the Crafts Guild of Manitoba for many years. Mom loved gardening and was an accomplished dressmaker and needlewoman who created many beautiful items of clothing, hand-stitched quilts, and a variety of needlework projects. She loved nature and surrounded herself with beauty. She was a modest and determined woman who lived with high expectations of herself and others. She was generous to her church and to the charities that help the people and especially the children in her city. On Wednesday, July 2, 2014 Margaret's Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peter's Anglican Church, 755 Elm Street at Grant Avenue. There will be a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Siloam Mission, or Winnipeg Harvest would be appreciated. Wojcik's Winnipeg Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204 - 897 - 4665, is in care of arrangements - wojciksfuneralchapel.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Such is the nature of our increasingly transient society that I would discover Margaret's death almost a year after the fact. No matter... she was one very special woman, and a very special soul mate of my Mom, Eileen. She used to describe Margaret referencing the same traits that have already been mentioned... bright, courageous, compassionate, an astute follower of the political scene, a rigorous volunteer, a proud mother, and "the most loyal friend a person could ever have." I trust that a wonderful spiritual reunion awaits her joyful spirit with those of like kind. I wish her family peace. - Posted by: Rev. Roy Nicol-Macdonald (Margaret was my mother's best friend) on: Apr 18, 2015

  • Margaret was a long time participant in my fitness walking class at the Rady JCC and was very committed to coming three times a week for many years. We became good friends and shared many great conversations over the years! - Posted by: Lori Derraugh (Friend) on: Oct 13, 2014

  • Margaret's passing has had a profound effect on our family. As her newest son-in-law, it was a privilege for me to be able to assist Nancy with her Mom's ever-increasing needs throughout this past year. On her numerous trips to appointments we would have fun and conversations in the "Thomson Taxi". She always faced her various ordeals with grace and determination. I'm going to miss her cooking, her dry humour and her strict adherence to form. Sleep in peace Margaret. Your loving son-in-law Al. - Posted by: Al Thomson (Son-in-law) on: Jun 09, 2014

  • Working at the Portsmouth where Mrs. Yeats lived and seeing her everyday was a joy. No matter what was going on she always had that little smile on her face and soon to follow was a quick witted comment. She had my heart the first day I met her and I truly miss seeing her sweet face when I go into work. Rest in peace Mrs. Yeats and may God bless you and your wonderful family. - Posted by: Andrea (I work at the Portsmouth Retirement Residence.) on: May 29, 2014

  • I worked at Charleswood Library for many years and Aunt Margaret was a regular. We had many wonderful conversations and I got to know her and she me. She was a lovely, interesting, understanding person. I saw her only once since my retirement but am grateful for knowing her during our library visits. - Posted by: Bernadette Holtman (Eibner) (Niece) on: May 28, 2014
