DOUG MOONEY With great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father and papa at the Grace Hospital on May 24, 2014 at the age of 76. Doug is forever remembered by his wife Lorraine, of 53 years; children (grandchildren), Brent (Jessica, Aynsley), Charlene and Brian (Melissa), Lisa and Ken (Melanie and Brendin); sister Sharon of Winnipeg, and brothers, Reg (Karen) and Bill of British Columbia. He worked at the Winnipeg Land Titles Office for 43 years and regardless of his position, he always went above and beyond and would do anything you needed. Doug enjoyed curling, umpiring and refereeing, but his two loves were singing and working at T & T Seeds. His love of helping people and working with his extended family made his days very entertaining. Dad touched many lives with his outgoing personality and sometimes stubborn Irish ways. What can we say - he was "One of a Kind". A Celebration of Doug's Life will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. A private family interment will be held at a later date. The family would like to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Brian and Kevin Twomey and Don Campbell for always looking after him throughout the years. We would also like to thank the staff at the ICU Grace Hospital for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doug's memory to Parkinson Society Manitoba or CancerCare Manitoba. Forever in our hearts. We love you SWEET DOUGIE. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-586-8044

  • I knew Doug for about 10 years. Every fall I would receive a phone call from him to umpire the annual bar association tournament. With fall upon us, I received a call today from Brent, his son and knew in my heart something had happened. I am so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. He was a kind, sweet man. I always looked forward to catching up with him on the past year and him sharing the homemade muffins his wife had put in his lunch. It will not be the same umpiring this tournament but Doug will be in our hearts. My sympathy to his wife and family. Joanne Hodgkinson - Posted by: Joanne Hodgkinson (Friend) on: Aug 31, 2014

  • It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of a good friend – “Sweet Dougie”. They say uniqueness is hard to find, but it is unmistakable once you find it. And in that spirit, as his obituary so eloquently states, Doug was indeed “one of a kind”. Doug used to assign baseball games for my father to umpire. I know that my father appreciate the trust Doug put in him sending him out to umpire some tough games. Years later, it was my absolute honor to accept his offer to help him referee weekly winter-time hockey games in the Law League. I will always remember Doug always being quick with a smile or a harmless joking gesture on the ice. And he wasn’t shy about belting out a song in the dressing room just to ensure the mood never got too serious. I often sang right back at him. In the end, there were just a lot of laughs and good memories. I know Doug touched many lives in a positive manner. To his dear family and many friends, please know how sorry I am to have learned of Doug’s passing. • Sorry to hear the news of Doug's passing. I knew Doug Mooney through my parents, Vince and Gail Lovallo. My Dad, Vince, was a singer too and to see and hear the two of them sing together was more than a treat. They had real stage presence and chemistry. That spirit between them carried through every time they met, like the baseball diamond, the curling rink, the mall or in each other's homes. Doug Mooney knew, because he believed, how to make everyone feel special. - Posted by: Brian & Monique Light (Friend) on: Jun 01, 2014

  • It was a great pleasure umpiring with Doug, many good times, he was all ways caring a smile, a joke here & there, he'd always look over & say "that was a good call eh", of course the singing even after a game. "Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow". God Bless. - Posted by: Kenneth Ellchuk (umpire friend) on: May 31, 2014

  • I used to babysit Melanie when she was very much younger, before school age. I always liked Lisa and loved Melanie to bits. She used to take trips to the lake with us. Lisa, Melanie, I am so very sorry for your loss, and you and your family are in my prayers, and thoughts. I don't think I ever met your father, but know that he must have been a wonderful man to have turned out such a wonderful daughter and granddaughter. - Posted by: Beth Balanduk (Friend of Lisa and Melanie) on: May 28, 2014

  • Words come easy to speak of a man with so much passion for all that life dealt him. Whether it was at work, play or as a husband and father, he excelled. We have been family friends since 1969 and later became co-workers at Winnipeg Land Titles. One day he came around the corner and said "MaryAnne, I have something to show you." He was wearing a replica of the Gold Jacket that Elvis wore. He said "what do you think?" I said "Dougie, YOU ARE THE BEST." To this he replied "How can I be, when you are!" He will be forever remembered and in the hearts of my children and I. - Posted by: MaryAnne Rutledge (Family Friend and Co-Worker) on: May 27, 2014

  • He saved us many a headache at Land Titles and we enjoyed his company when we bowled in the same league in the early 70s. Noreen and the late Doug Stone - Posted by: Noreen Stone () on: May 27, 2014

  • I was sad to read this today. My condolences to Doug's family. I had the pleasure to deal with him at the Land Titles Office on many occasions in the 80s and 90s; and he would always drop what he was doing to help me out. I never forgot that. He was an ump in the lawyers baseball league where he called me out many times; and a ref in the lawyers hockey league, where he sent me to the box on a few occasions. I never forgot that either, but he was right every time! A great guy. Rest in Peace Doug. - Posted by: Tom Harrison, Calgary, AB (friend) on: May 27, 2014

  • I worked with Doug for several years at the Winnipeg Land Titles Office. Doug was an extremely hard worker and famous among co-workers and clients for the volume of work he was able to process. Doug worked hard until the day he retired. He really was "one of a kind". Always happy, always singing, he knew everyone and was friendly with everyone. Doug had a lot more energy than the average bloke and was always interesting because he had so many outside interests. I was very sorry to learn that Doug's health failed him in the last few years. My condolences go out to his family. - Posted by: Georgina Phillips (co-worker) on: May 27, 2014

  • Very disapointed to see that Dougie had passed away. I met Dougie when I went to play ball with the Ringers ball team. Doug was one of our regular umps. Didn't always agree with all of his calls but he was always fun to have as an ump. Then one day who shows up at our local Polish club singing like Tom Jones, Doug Mooney, and he was pretty darn good. A couple years passed, went to buy some plants, T&T seeds, there he was again, at our service helping us to pick out some plants and an apple tree. I was even brought over to his friends as a witness that he was a great kareoke singer, and he was. I wish I could have run into him again, he was a great guy. - Posted by: blaine (friend) on: May 27, 2014
