DENNIS RICHARD FIELD
Born: Oct 30, 1952
Date of Passing: May 26, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDENNIS RICHARD FIELD October 30, 1952 - May 26, 2014 Dennis died peacefully at home. He was born, raised and for much of his life proudly lived in Elmwood. Dennis went to Elmwood High School and worked with the City of Winnipeg. Although the family moved to Alberta in 1995 as they say, "You can take the boy out of Elmwood but you can't take Elmwood out of the boy". In fact like a true son of Elmwood, one of Dennis' great pleasures was when someone brought him a large jar of Salisbury House special sauce. When the kids were young, Dennis was involved in all of their sports: lacrosse, hockey, soccer and baseball both at Kelvin Community Club and in Calgary. As well as being a devoted trainer or manager and mentor to the kids and their teammates Dennis pitched in to do anything that needed to be done to keep Kelvin Community Club going. He made a deep commitment to his community effort and in doing so gained many close friendships. There wasn't a single selfish bone in his body. For Dennis it was all about others. He was generous to a fault and he never met a stranger. He was well-known for befriending people and going out of his way to make them feel good. He would give you the shirt off his back, his jacket or hat. All you had to say was, "Hey that is nice", and he would try to give it to you. People opened up to him because they could tell he was genuinely interested in them. If you asked to bum a smoke, chances are you would end up with two or three and in addition end up telling him your entire life story. He has been known to open up our home to strangers or family and friends that needed a place to stay for a bit - even if it meant he himself had to give up something to accommodate them. Dennis had a special place in his heart for kids and old folks; he could talk to them for hours. His mother-in-law used to say that when the day came that we put her in a nursing home it would be Dennis' job to visit her every day. Over the past months when Grandpa Dennis would be in bed, the grandkids would sit beside him for hours talking, watching television and more talking. Den felt a special bond with animals. At a petting zoo a few years ago he had spent hours petting baby snow leopards, cheetahs and tigers. As we drove away he was sad that the baby tiger hadn't bitten him so he could have a tiger scar. The not-so-secret love of his life was Clint, his Bassett Hound. Clint was Dennis' best friend and they told each other all their secrets. Denny formed many friendships that have spanned 50 years in both Winnipeg and Calgary. He felt truly blessed to have so many friends and he remained close with most of them. Dennis is survived by his wife Landa, two sons Keith (Wendy) and Landen (Melissa), his grandchildren Kaydence, Charlie, Leo and Halle, siblings Marv (Mary) and Lorraine Finch, nieces and nephews Trevor and David Finch, Madeline and Mackenzie Jefferson, Jakob and Sam Menard. He was predeceased by his parents Stan and Olga Field, and his nephew Brian Field. Clint and Dennis are now together. We will miss them both. At Dennis' request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please do a Dennis' and pay it forward. Do a kindness or listen to someone with an open heart.

Dennis was a cool dude. We remember Dennis was always up for something cool: plain old fun, dangerously fun, even more *dangerously fun, and naturally just party. *in our mid teens, the likes of us throwing dartboard darts at each other with the Booth brothers on Carmen Ave. "friggen Ouch" - Posted by: Ken Kveder (Friend from West Elmwood and Roxy Park Gang) on: Jan 09, 2015

I lived on Martin one street over from Dennis growing up. I remember Dennis being a great friend. The parties were so much fun and because I lived the next street over, went over the next morning to clean up. There were a few of us who cleaned the house so good that his mom must have known there was a party. I miss Dennis and those days. I didn't get to know Dennis for very long but I'm glad I did. Dennis took me under his wing for a year and a half, without that I don't know where I would be. I will miss our conversations sitting on the stairs for hours talking about everything and taking Clint for a stroll through the neighbourhood. His wisdom will forever be with me and I am thankful for this. When I thought I had nobody to talk to he was there for me. He helped me become the person I am today. Thank you Dennis I will never forget you. - Posted by: Dylan Frizzell (Friend) on: Jun 06, 2014

Your tribute to Dennis was right on the mark. In my teenage years we all used to hang out together at Dens Grill or Pete's restaurant or Dennis S. place on Carman. I don't think Dennis ever met anyone he couldn't be a friend to. More than a couple of times I can remember he gave up his own bed at his parent's place to let someone sleep in when they had one too many at a party when parents were gone for the night. Where did our buddy sleep, in the bathtub because all other couches etc. we're being used. It has been so many years since I have seen Dennis but I still feel a loss. My sincere condolences to family and current friends - Posted by: Serge Lajoie (Teenage buddy from Elmwood when Dennis lived on Carmen ave) on: Jun 03, 2014

Too many fond memories of Dennis and Kelvin CC than I can count, especially our Sunday night baseball league and after party back at Kelvin. Just like Kelvin CC, Dennis will be truly missed. My condolences go out to Landa and the family, Dennis led a very happy life and was fortunate to have been able to spend it with his loving partner Landa. Perhaps he will yet get his 'tiger scar' in the great unknown we shall all face one time. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Christopher Wishart (Friend) on: Jun 01, 2014
