Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySOPHIA (SOPHIE) PETELYCKY Sophia died peacefully on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Richmond General Hospital at the age of 89. She was born in Palashivka, Ternopil oblast, Ukraine on April 5, 1925. Having been forced to flee her homeland due to the war, her family, comprising of her mother, Paraska, father, Jacob, and sister, Maria, spent six years in Germany in refugee camps. She and her husband Steve immigrated to Canada in 1950 where they first settled in Winnipeg and then moved to Richmond, BC in 1967. She was an active member and volunteer at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Winnipeg, Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church (St. Mary's) in Vancouver, and at the Ukrainian Community Society of Ivan Franco in Richmond. She was a wonderful mother, full of love and support for her children, family and friends. She greatly enjoyed gardening and cross-stitching. Her legacy is in the form of beautifully cross-stitched altar cloths presently in use at St. Mary's parish. She was predeceased by her son Taras (1964), her father Jacob (1955), and her mother Paraska (2002). She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her husband Steve; her sister Maria; her children Ihor (Oksana), Marian, Theresa (Trevor), and Andrew (Ashley); her grandchildren, Julian, Marta and Tony; her nieces and nephew, Anna (Peter), Myron, and Oksana; and her great-nieces Marisa (Emmanuel), Nina (Ben), Tania (Pete), and Alexandra, as well as relatives in Winnipeg, United States and Ukraine. Panachyda will be held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, June 5 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church located at 550 West 14th Ave., Vancouver. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated the next day at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 6 at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, followed by coffee and tea after the Mass. Interment to Holy Family Cemetery in Winnipeg will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Richmond General Hospital for their care and compassion.
