DOUGLAS WAYNE WIRTH March 21, 1943 - June 9, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Doug Wirth on Monday, June 9, 2014 at the St. Boniface Hospital. Doug is survived by his loving wife, Gladys (nee Thorvaldson); his much loved daughters: Wendy, Holly, and Natalie; and three wonderful grandchildren: Kali, Sydney, and Julian. He is also survived by his brother, John Wirth, and sister, Nancelyn (Stan) Ross, as well as sisters-in-law: Gloria (Mike) Tilleman and Carolyn Thorvaldson. He will be missed by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Doug was born in Winnipeg to parents John and Freda. He was raised on Cordova Street and later attended the University of Manitoba. He was a successful chartered accountant and entrepreneur. He was a member of Delta Upsilon and made many life-long friends through his fraternity. His family has many fond memories of summers at the lake. Doug loved the outdoors and being by the water. He often said a rainy day at the cottage was better than any day at work. He was also very handy and was able to finish any project he tackled. His interests included boats, cars, and sports. He enjoyed driving all kinds of vehicles, and watching auto racing and basketball. In keeping with Doug's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). The family would like to thank the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital for their care for Doug during his stay there. Special thanks to Kim, Elvin, Noel, and Colleen, as well as the amazing staff in the ICU. We are grateful for the love, attention, and support of our myriad family, friends, and colleagues. You have nourished our spirits. If so desired, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6 or a charity of your choice. • I always looked up to cousin Doug. Our family spent so much time at Laclu and when Doug (who was 6 yrs older than me ) came over to Johnson Island from his family's cottage on Indian Island to visit, I was just mesmerized by everything he did and said. When I found out that his birthday was one day before mine it made me feel as if we were more than just 1st cousins , but better than that. I tried to do what Doug did in swimming and fishing and boating. When our family moved to Ontario we lost contact but everytime his Mom and Dad came for a visit I always got an update on Dougs life and successes in life. Even though Doug has past, he will always be admired by me! - Posted by: Ronn Striowski (Cousin) on: Jun 11, 2014

  • A side bar to Doug that is in fact referred to in the obituary is that not only was he good with his hands, he was willing to help others who were not so good. I was a classmate of Doug's all through junior and high school. Back then we had to take Shops in Grades 7, 8 and 9. I was easily the worst in the class with no ability, aptitude or interest and when the teacher gave instructions, he was speaking in a foreign language to me. But, I was able to persuade Doug (who finished his Shop assignments speedily and to my eye at least perfectly), to assist me in the completion of these projects. To be fair, these tasks. I gave to Doug were not completions in fact but the whole project. If he knew he was doing my project, he did not let on or did not care. My part in it was to chat with him as if I knew what he was doing. He was always so happy to help. A remarkable quality which I bet was with him all of his life. I never forgot him, cheerful, alert and so competent in many things but particularly handy. - Posted by: Gerry Posner (Old classmate) on: Jun 11, 2014

  • Doug was a kind man. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Nikita Ross (Niece in law) on: Jun 11, 2014
