At age 10 she was sent as a "war evacuee" to Canada, where she remained for five years. In 1947 she entered Nursing School, graduating as a state-registered nurse in 1950. She served as a nursing officer in Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, stationed initially in Japan, where she cared for Commonwealth troops serving in the Korean War. Later she was transferred to Germany, where she met her future husband, who was doing his national service in the Royal Army Medical Corps. They married in England in 1956. In 1961, the family immigrated to Winnipeg. When her younger son entered school, Margaret fulfilled a lifelong ambition, enrolling at the University of Manitoba to study English literature. She successfully completed her B.A. (Hons) and M.A. She subsequently taught literature at the University of Winnipeg for some years, until forced to retire because of ill health. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Cyril Isaac Woolf, in 2012 and by a daughter, Caroline, stillborn in 1958. She is survived by her sons Daniel (Julie) and Jeremy (Miranda), and four grandchildren, Sarah, Sam, David and Bridget. Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Department of English at the University of Manitoba, in memory of Margaret Woolf, 179 Extended Education Complex, Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2.

  • Sooooo sad to hear of Margaret's passing. I know the last few years have been tough. She and Cyril had a wonderful and loving life together. I am grateful for knowing both of them over the past 29 years and getting to see Margaret just before she left to Vancouver. My condolences to all the family. - Posted by: Patty (Tuxedo Dental Winnipeg) (friend) on: Jun 14, 2014
