ELSIE BLAKELEY It is with profound sorrow that I announce the death of my beloved mother, Elsie Blakeley, on June 13, 2014 after a long life well lived. She leaves behind to mourn her loss myself, Diane, her sisters Loretta (Alex) and Dorothy (Warren), many nieces and nephews, and our close family friends, the Hemmett family. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred, in 1987 and by her son, Fred junior, in 2011. Mom led a very active life which for many years included the lake' and later travelling. She saw much of the world on numerous trips and cruises. Her final trip was to Europe with myself at the age of 89. She suffered a stroke in 2011 but, in spite of her more limited function, lived the remainder of her life with courage, determination, and grace. She continued to cherish each day and was thankful to all those who supported her during this time. Mom and I would like to thank the staff of 3 West Geriatric Rehabilitation Unit at Riverview Health Centre who worked so hard to help her return to her home after each new health challenge and without whom she never would have had these last three years of living independently. She also received wonderful care and support from the home care staff who were there for her each and every day. She attended the Geriatric Day Hospital at Riverview Health Centre weekly for much of these final three years as they helped her recover from each new illness. It was the highlight of her week! Finally, Mom and I are grateful to the staff of CD 3 at Riverview Health Centre where she spent the final few months of her life. They cared for her with compassion and respect. They were all a lifeline for us and I don't know how we could possibly have managed without their help. They are the true heroes of the health care system. As per Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Once upon a memory Someone wiped away a tear Wrapped me in her arms and loved me Thank you Mother dear'

  • There are no words that can fully express our feeling of loss, Diane. Your mom was a wonderful woman, and we so enjoyed having her with us on special occasions and especially down south. Her vivacity and zest for life, along with her strength and spirit, will remain in our memories for many, many years to come. She was an inspiration and a model of living life to the fullest. With love ... - Posted by: Ken and Connie Hemmett ((sort-of-adopted) family) on: Jun 23, 2014
