Date of Passing: Jun 24, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMAURICE ALBERT COMEAU Passed away peacefully on June 24, 2014, with his wife Ruth at his side, at the Charleswood Care Centre in Winnipeg, MB. Maurice is survived by his wife Ruth, son Gordon (Elizabeth Tarry), daughter Carolyn (Bruce Duval) and his grandchildren Michael, Kate, Claire and Paul. He is also survived by his brother Leonard (Linda), Ruth's brothers and sisters (spouses), many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. He is predeceased by his daughter Theresa (Jim Ludlow, Cedric, Charlie, Fiona and Amanda), who passed away in 2012, and parents, Wilfred and Jeanette. Maurice was born on March 7, 1935 in Montreal, QC, and shortly thereafter, moved to Island Falls, SK and then to Flin Flon, MB. It was here, in what he considered his hometown, he met Ruth and they married in 1959. In his younger years, Maurice attended school for one year at the convent in Wauchope, SK, and college at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox. Maurice worked for a number of years for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting; and in 1962, moved to southern Manitoba where he started his long career with the Department of Natural Resources as a Conservation Officer. He finished as Hunter Safety and Guide Training Coordinator for the Province of Manitoba. Maurice will be remembered for his great dedication to family, sense of humour, and for running into someone he knew almost everywhere he went. Maurice enjoyed sports all of his life, playing hockey, lacrosse, curling, baseball and golf (six hole in ones!). Even more, he enjoyed following Carolyn and Theresa in their track and field endeavors, and later on, the activities of his grandchildren. He also enjoyed the great outdoors, family camping and fishing trips, hunting trips with Gordon and friends, his four legged companions, and vacationing in warmer climates with Ruth. The family would like to thank staff at the Heritage Lodge and Charleswood Care Centre for the gentle and compassionate care provided. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in his name can be made to the Alzheimer Society or CancerCare. An intimate family gathering to celebrate Maurice's life will be held later in July.

Dear Comeau Family, We were saddened to hear of Maurice’s passing and our hearts go out to you during this difficult time. My parents and I have been discussing the wonderful memories that we have of Maurice and your family. I remember as a little girl Maurice taught me a song “I know someone you don’t know Yogi, Yogi,” This song was special because Yogi had a girlfriend named “Cindy”. I saw a picture of him where he put on some glasses he had found, a baseball cap and struck a funny pose. He was always so great with kids. My parents have fond memories of Ruth was leading all of the children around a camp fire in song at Wekusko Falls. I remembered every time we camped thereafter I would ask her to do it again. She kindly supplied me with ointment when I fell and my hands touched the stones surrounding the campfire. Due to her kind and thoughtful intervention, I am scar free. In addition we remember fishing at Woosey Lake, Bakers Narrows, and Cormorant. Your girls also made awesome mini canoes out of bark. You have meant a great deal to us over the years, and we truly feel for you and wish you the best always. Morris was the regional enforcement officer for the south-east region when I began career as a conservation officer. With his great sense of humour he always helped the young officers to become better field personnel. He took pride in everything he did. When a fellow officer, Neal, became physically handicapped, Morris was a true friend and assisted him whenever he could. He was a member of the championship golfing team which won the 2009 Wild Boar Classic. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family. - Posted by: Jack & Christine Kowalchuk (friend) on: Jun 28, 2014

We are sorry to hear of your loss. I wanted to share two very fond memories of "Mr Comeau". One was Saturday mornings in the weeks after my dad's stroke when he was released from the rehab hospital on weekend home visits. Maurice used to come over for coffee or breakfast, catch my dad up on all the office goings on and share a laugh or two. The other is the effort Maurice made to take dad hunting in his wheel chair. With a rifle somehow attached to the chair - off they went... A very kind positive man whose friendship was much appreciated! May your memories bring you comfort at this time. - Posted by: Sheryl Bates Dancho (friend) on: Jun 28, 2014

I remember Mr. Maurice Comeau as a fun-loving guy who could sure pull a practical joke! Maurice worked with our Flood Recovery office in the Ste-Adolphe Arena parking lot in late summer and winter 1997. With a crew of seconded provincial staff we helped the people in the Red River Valley recover from the 1997 flood. I remember fondly around Halloween 1997 that I had brought in a bag of hard candy and had passed that around for all staff to enjoy. I remember that one of our staff took a bite out of the hard candy and shortly thereafter he ran out and was not seen for a few hours... When the staff member returned to duty he advised us (including Maurice) that he had broken a tooth on the hard candy and had gone to the dentist for repairs! A few minutes after this explanation Maurice came into our trailer office with his false teeth out (in plain view for all to see) sarcastically protesting that he had broken a tooth as well on my hard candy! ;o) I look forward to seeing my friend Maurice in Heaven in order to renew our friendship... My condolences to the entire Comeau family! - Posted by: Joseph Marc Bruyère (Friend and co-worker during the Red River Valley Flood Recovery Operation 1997.) on: Jun 28, 2014
