IKE KRAUT It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ike Kraut, husband, father and grandfather on July 1, 2014. Ike died suddenly at the age of 81 and will be dearly missed by his wife Marlene, children Marve, Lana, Lisa and Myles, daughter-in-law Harriet, son-in-law Wayne, and grandchildren Jenna, Ashley, Brooke, Arielle, Adam, Meka, Zach, Daniel and David. Ike arrived in Canada with his family from Poland in 1939, just before the Second World War. As the owner of Charleswood Department Store for almost 60 years, he was well known in the community for his sense of humour and welcoming nature. As a healthy and vibrant man, Ike enjoyed his morning routine of coffee at Timothy's in Tuxedo, where he began each day with many friends who loved his company. Ike spent his evenings at the Simkin Centre, visiting his beloved wife Marlene and bringing joy to many staff and residence. He was a loving father, proud of his children and grandchildren. We will miss you Ike, your laughter, positive spirit and kindness. You will forever live in our hearts and minds. Shivah will be held at 26 Ramsgate Bay, Tuxedo, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (ending Monday, July 7). Since the early 80's Ike has assisted me in being the right "gift giver" for all the important women in my life… wife, mother, mother-in-law. A mere visit to the store with them and sizes and style were locked in his memory bank! Each year a couple visits always complimented Birthdays and Christmas. His gift of personal service and friendship will truly be missed. Hearing of his buying trip stories, his family experiences and the buzz in the community was always engaging and the "descriptive words" he used to identify items in his store made you feel good about the buying experience. He was extremely personable and I appreciated our visits in the store and in the community. He will be missed. My condolences to the family and thank you Ike, for sharing your gift of Positive living with all of us. - Posted by: Blair Sonnichsen (Customer) on: Sep 03, 2014

So many lovely things I found at Ike's!!! He just seemed to know what was needed even after a very brief description. Always had a nice visit while I was there and came away chuckling as this dear man always had something to say to cheer you up. I will miss that alot; rest in peace and bless you. Just today I read of Ike's passing in an article about the closing of His Store – A Charleswood original institution... My deep condolences to all his family & close friends... I grew up in Charleswood, and was a carrier for the St.James Leader at the time when Ike took over the previous "Sanderson's" department store in 1956... Ike resumed that store's newspaper subscription, and he was a very hospitable, garrulous and generous man... He even gave me some excellent "Happy Foot" socks as a Christmas tip (most comfortable)... About 50 years later, I revisited the store (assisting an 80-yr-old lady with her shopping). I doubt that he actually remembered me personally (since he was well acquainted with so many local people over the intervening years), but he still well remembered the Charleswood 50's era... He was a wonderful contributor to the community... I'll always very fondly remember him. (and anybody who met him will Know why he'll always hold a spot in my memory, even though I only knew him briefly. - Posted by: Norm Willey (Former Charleswood resident (Elmhurst Rd.)) on: Aug 24, 2014

My condolences to the entire Kraut family on the loss of Ike. He was a very good kind man, and I really enjoyed all the years that I shopped at his store. He always treated me like the most important customer in the world. And he was a very caring person. I will miss my friend. Heaven is now a happier place. How sad I was to notice as I was driving by today that the Charleswood Department store was having a closing out sale and further saddened when I found out that Mr. Kraut has passed away. I had been in recently to update my spring/ summer wardrobe and was so appreciative of his help and expertise, especially now that the thrill of shopping is not what it used to be for me. He always remembered me each time I went into the store and would recall business dealings he had had with some of my relatives who were also in the clothing business. Having a mother-in-law in the Simkin Centre gave us something else to talk about. I learned how dedicated he was to his wife. Mr. Kraut and his wonderful community store will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Karen Bieber (Customer) on: Jul 16, 2014

Our deepest sympathy to the family of a wonderful gentleman. While Ike spent his evenings at the Simkin Centre visiting Marlene, he was also providing a great kindness to my dad, Alec Vine, who would sit with Ike after my mom would go home after dinner. It gave her great peace of mind to know that my dad was watching whatever "game" was on TV, in the company of an old friend. Ike was so kind to my parents and will always be remembered with much fondness. - Posted by: Cindy Vine Streifler (Friend of Lisa and Wayne) on: Jul 14, 2014

I was saddened to hear of Ike's passing. My heartfelt sympathies go to all his family. My sister who lives in Charleswood introduced me to Ike and the store many years ago. Each spring and fall I would stop at the store and Ike never forgot who I was and gave me a personal greeting. He was a fine gentleman, very kind, clever, with a real spirit. I have stopped often in the last 20 years. I join all his clientele in passing on my condolences. - Posted by: Audrey Houston, Dauphin, Mb (customer) on: Jul 12, 2014

My husband first got to know Ike when he was the Fire Inspector for this area many years ago. I was subsequently introduced to Ike and delighted in shopping in his store. I often received compliments on clothes that I had purchased there. We would often drop by just to say hello, and Ike was always so welcoming. I left town on July 2 and just returned two days ago. A friend told me the sad news of Ike's passing. My sincere condolences to all his family. He was a very special man, and is a great loss to you and to all of Charleswood. - Posted by: Ivadell Telfer (Customer and friend) on: Jul 11, 2014

My sister and I loved shopping at Ike's store. He knew us by name and he was always so helpful on what we should choose to wear. We bragged to all of our friends what good merchandise he carried. Many ladies have picked up beautiful clothes there. Ruth and I are going to miss him very much. What a lovely man he was. Rest in Peace! - Posted by: Irene driedger (customer at the store) on: Jul 11, 2014

My husband Norm Greaves was a friend of Ike's since he opened the store. Ike always was so good to us. Charleswood Department Store was the only original store left in the village. He will be sadly missed. I just bought a bathing suit from him June 30th. - Posted by: Lynn Greaves (Long time friend and customer) on: Jul 07, 2014

As fellow customers at Timothy's coffee shop, my husband and i greatly appreciated Ike's friendly presence at 7:15 every morning. He was always cheerful, and eager to talk about anything from politics to the Jets. What always shone through was his devotion to his family and his love of his work. - Posted by: Isobel Waters () on: Jul 07, 2014

As we all grew up and went to school in Beausejour our family renewed acquaintances when we moved to Charleswood over fifty years ago. Ike was always friendly and had a cheery word for everyone. He was committed to his business but generous to community. Donated to our Horticultural Society every year for the auction. We will miss him!
