MARGARET EVA SELINGER Margaret Eva Selinger, 85, of Winnipeg, Manitoba died peacefully on June 29, 2014 at St. Boniface Hospital after a struggle with breast cancer. Her strong will carried her to the final days in Palliative Care where she visited with other patients. She enjoyed being read to and having conversations with family. Margaret Crawford was born September 2, 1928 in Craik, Saskatchewan to Peter and Eva (Whitman) Crawford. She was the youngest of three with a sister Ida and brother Clayton. Growing up on the prairies Margaret enjoyed figure skating, writing poetry, playing hockey and highland dancing. Margaret was known for her charm and intelligence as she studied secretarial science and went on to work for an insurance, a grain and real estate companies. She then moved to Winnipeg where she ran her own family clothing business in St. James while single parenting her sons Dan and Greg. She went on to be the office manager for a trucking company and steel bin seller before returning part time to real estate and antique sales in St. James. Margaret enjoyed a brief time as a stock car driver and a horse owner. In retirement she participated in a bowling league, read novels, played the VLTs and kept abreast of current affairs. Margaret was predeceased by her parents and siblings. She is survived by sons Dan and Greg, her daughter-in-law Claudette Toupin and grandsons Eric and Pascal. She also, in the spirit of her mother Eva, kept in touch with many relatives including her niece Sandy and husband Pat Brown of Vancouver as well as her aunt Polly Ervin of Moncton, NB. A funeral service was held at the Courts of St. James, Friday, July 4, with Reverend Bill Millar. He invited family and friends to remember with gratitude what Margaret had contributed to their lives. People recalled her kindness and resiliency, her independent approach to life, and her love of having a moment of fun and teasing with all. Margaret is at rest in the columbarium at the St. Boniface Cemetery. The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of the St. James Community Clinic, the Home Care services, CancerCare Manitoba, the Palliative Care program at the St. Boniface Hospital and the Desjardins Funeral Chapel. Margaret felt well treated by her care givers, particularly at the hospital. Donations in memory of Margaret Selinger can be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation or the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
