SHIRLEY ANN CORMACK (nee KUCHMA) August 18, 1944 - July 6, 2014 It is with much sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Shirley will forever be remembered and cherished by her husband Robert; sons Rob (Denisse) and Matthew; her daughter Julia (Mark), and her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy and the topic of many conversations, Noah, Tanner, Kian, Jakob and Kaspar. Predeceased by her father Frank Kuchma, and sister Judy Venier, she will also be greatly missed by her mother, Anne Pomanski; her brothers Kenny (Michelle), Ronnie (Diane), and her sister Kathy (Allan). Born in Winnipeg, Shirley was the eldest of five children, and there began her role as the family Matriarch'. She was always one to host, and never one to come empty handed. She loved to entertain, whether it be Christmas in the basement of the family home she shared with her husband of nearly 50 years, or at the restaurant she shared with her sister. Early in her career, Shirley was an office clerk for Eaton's, followed by the many roles of a research assistant for various health studies across Winnipeg, a census worker for Statistics Canada, and an events caterer. For the past two decades she had owned and operated Barney Gargles with her sister and business partner Judy, and it was there she found her true calling. It allowed her to socialize, which she loved; continue the baking she so enjoyed doing; and develop great friendships with the staff and customers she met during this time. It was truly something she gave her all to, right until the end. Words cannot express the loss that those who knew her feel. She was a selfless and genuine person, and she always made a point of ensuring those around her were looked after. It was who she was, and who she will be remembered as. "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are grey You never know, dear, how much I love you Please don't take my sunshine away The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping I dreamt I held you in my arms When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken So I hung my head, and I cried You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are grey You never know, dear, how much I love you Please don't take my sunshine away" A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Viewing will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the service starting at 2:00 p.m. Shirley would not want us to cry for her, but to celebrate the life she lived. In doing so, friends and family are invited after the service to celebrate her life at Julia and Mark's home. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. • Our heartfelt condolences to the Kuchma family and especially Shirley's immediate family and Ronnie, Diane, Dan and Shayne. It has been a tough year with the losses of Judy and now Shirley. Shirley was a warm, caring and generous person and we were priviledged to know her. She was a very successful business woman and the closing of Barney Gargles will be felt not only by the community of Selkirk but those of us who traveled there to see the sisters and enjoy their wonderful food. - Posted by: Pat & Peter Rothney (Ronnie & Diane's Family) on: Jul 12, 2014

  • My sincere condolences to both Shirley and Judy's families. Shirley and Judy were inseparable and it seems appropriate that they are together again! My involvement with these two creative ladies goes back to the UCW both at St. Johns United Church and Kildonan United Church. We also certainly enjoyed many excellent meals at Barney Gargles. They will truly be missed! - Posted by: Jackie Blonski (Fellow UCW Member ) on: Jul 11, 2014

  • We have gone to Barney's for about twenty years. It will not be the same without Shirley and Judy and all the great staff they had over years. We always enjoyed our visits there and loved sharing a laugh and a few pleasant remarks with Shirley. I loved her desserts and all the wonderful baking she did. She always had helpful suggestions for us and was helpful and supportive always. It was a good place to see friends and visit with family and make new friends. Our sincere regrets to Shirley's family on their loss, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. She will be missed very much. • My family and I were always made to feel at home any time we visited Barney's. Shirley would stop by our table and briefly chat about our sons as they were babies when we first started going to her restaurant. Over the years we enjoyed the great food and kind words Shirley shared with us. Thank you for the memories and our condolences to the family. - Posted by: Brad Billson (patron) on: Jul 11, 2014

  • Shirley's presence will be missed in the neighborhood. She was a positive, no nonsense influence in our casual block Mom's group who monitored the shenanigans of our kids. Though she had a busy schedule she always took the time to stop and chat about what was happening in all our children's lives as well as happening in the neighborhood. - Posted by: Kenna Ann Shipp (neighbor and friend) on: Jul 10, 2014
