AUDREY MORRIS With great sadness the family of Audrey Morris announces her death on June 1, 2014 at the age of 83. Audrey was born in July 1930 in Athens, ON, the youngest of three children, and lived in Winnipeg since 1966. Audrey completed her undergraduate and Master's degrees in Political Studies at the University of Toronto. She wrote a book about Susanna Moodie and Catherine Parr Trail, "Gentle Pioneers", serialized in Chatelaine Magazine and then published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1968. Audrey held civil service positions in Ottawa, including at the Department of Transport and the Unemployment Insurance Commission. She was also a political speech writer and ghost writer, the latter practice she continued throughout her life. Audrey established her own labour market consultancy after moving to Winnipeg in 1966, in addition to being a columnist for the Winnipeg Free Press's business section. Over 35 years she helped many to establish their own businesses, professions, and academic careers. In addition to a passion for dogs and cats, Audrey was an ardent supporter of the arts, especially Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers. She shared her love for jazz and classical music as well as her love for literature and writing. She was one of the Wolseley neighbourhood's social convenors, inviting many of the neighbourhood children over to play on her home computer. A great supporter of and mentor to many in her immediate and extended families, Audrey Morris will be deeply missed by those, both great and small, whose lives she touched and enriched. • Audrey Morris can rightfully take her place as one of primary influences of Canada's largest program of its kind - The SENIORS POETRY PROGRAM. Audrey was an early influencer. I am sorry she was not around when we founded this program. One of our upcoming programs will honor her memory. She was one of the few people to subscribe to a tiny literary publication called "MOMENT MAGAZINE" - so tiny the magazine was printed on Gestetner machines and dispatched by Canada Post for the princely sum of one (1) penny. Such literary luminaries as Leonard Cohen, Irving Layton, Margaret Atwood, Milton Acorn, Al Purdy, Gwendolyn MacEwen graced its unique pagination. Thank you Miss Morris. - Posted by: Morris J Bay (Friend) on: Nov 04, 2023

  • In 1968/69 I had the great pleasure of living in Ms Morris's home as a tenant. She was wonderfully kind to me, and introduced me to grinding my own coffee. She was very inspirational in our talks and discussions. At this time I was only 18 yrs old. I have several fond memories, one time she took me out driving in her Porsche. I had never been in such a neat car. I have the honour of owning a signed copy of her book. I just reread it, and that is why I did a google seach. I was very sorry to see that Ms Morris had passed. My condolences to her family and friends. Sincerely Lynda Phillips - Posted by: Lynda Phillips(Bowen) (aquaintence) on: Dec 27, 2014

  • What a wonderful, wise, witty woman and writer was Audrey! Bless her for her many gifts that helped so many people realize their own potential as human beings and members of the larger Winnipeg community. She will always be in my heart with gratitude for a longstanding friendship that, despite distance of time and space, in its quiet and respectful way enriched, sustained and supported the best of my life. Meegwetch Audrey. God Bless. - Posted by: Laura Steiman Shofley (friend, neighbour, admirer) on: Jul 15, 2014

  • It was a great privilege to be a friend and associate of Audrey's. She was a brilliant woman with exceptional intellectual stretch and ability. An author, columnist and consultant to many people transiting the labour market. I will miss our lengthy discussions on politics, economics and faith. May perpetual light shine on her and may she rest in peace. - Posted by: Frank Pearson (Friend) on: Jul 15, 2014
