INGE MARKMANN Ending a life well lived, Mom passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014 at age 90. She leaves to cherish her memory: Knud, her husband and best friend of 68 years; children: John (Edie), Karen (Paul), Marg, Helene (Jim) and Anni (Daivid); special nephew, Donald (Eileen); 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sister Birthe and extended family members in Denmark and many dear friends and acquaintances in Canada. Inge was born in Roenne on the Island of Bornholm in Denmark to Katrina and August Moeller, the sixth of nine children on February 29, 1924 (yes she really only had 22 birthdays!) Mom and Papa had a chance meeting on a train they were both travelling on between Nexoe and Roenne. After a short engagement, they were married on April 10, 1946. Mom and Papa immigrated to Canada in 1951 with three young children. Later on they added two more children: "made in Canada with Danish parts". While Papa earned a living, Mom took care of the children and their home. She loved cleaning so much that, in the early 1970s once Anni was in school, she began cleaning other people's homes, a job she continued until she was 80! After Papa retired in 1982, they travelled "home" to Denmark every other year, the last time in 2009 with Anni and Karen. They enjoyed their yearly trip to British Columbia to visit Karen, Marg, and Helene and friends. They also travelled to the southern States a few times (tenting!) and went on a bus trip to the Maritimes. Mom and Papa were proud of their Danish heritage and volunteered many hours at the Scandinavian Pavilion during Folkorama (if you ate there during the 1970s and 1980s, you likely enjoyed Mom's open face Danish sandwiches and delectable raspberry squares). And of course the Scandinavian Cultural Centre on Erin Street: Mom cooked many meals (and those scrumptious buns!) and desserts for various groups (Danish Club, Choir, Stamp Collectors Club). They met so many people over the years and made friends with many of them - not just the Danes, but also from the other Nordic nations. Mom and Papa were always active: gardening, tenting, walking, taking up cross-country skiing in their 50s and started curling at the Victoria Curling Club (Danish Curling Club Sunday mornings) in their 60s. Mom was out for a daily walk and slipped on ice and broke her hip on Boxing Day 2007. That didn't stop her! She still walked regularly with the walker for support. They did move from their home on Woodydell to an apartment (no stairs) in 2008. She really enjoyed the swimming pool and was in there daily for aquatic exercises with several ladies in the block. Mom finally got to retire in 2012 when they moved to their current home at Devonshire House II in Transcona, a senior assisted living suite. No more shopping and cooking and dishes and cleaning! Mom's health began to decline in December 2013. After many visits to Concordia Hospital and many blood transfusions, her body was just getting too tired to carry on. She died peacefully in hospital the morning of Friday, July 11, 2014. A Celebration of Inge's Life will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre, 764 Erin Street. As per Mom's wishes, after the celebration of life ceremony, we will enjoy Open-Faced Danish Sandwiches, Beer and Akvavit. To ensure we have ample delectable sandwiches and desserts, please confirm your attendance by leaving a message at 204-256-1530. The family would like to thank the many home care personnel for their help over the past few months, special thanks to April and Lena of Devonshire House II and the rest of the employees, and the Concordia Hospital staff for their excellent care and compassion. And thank you to the many anonymous blood donors; we were able to have her an extra eight months because of your generous gift. If desired, donation in Inge's memory may be made to the Scandinavian Cultural Centre, 764 Erin St., Winnipeg, MB R3G 2W4, or charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I've been trying to think of a fitting tribute Inge, but no matter how I've tried it would be way toooo long, tooo many memories. When I was little it seemed that I along with my parents were always together with the Markmanns. I spent many nights sleeping over as the parents went out to parties and Karen and Margaret were the babysitters for myself, Helene and Squirt. Many picnics, road trips, House parties, and of course Scandinavian Centre events and Folklorama. I feel like I've lost my second MOM. I guess I haven't been as close to them as I should have been lately, but I always called on both Knud and Inge's birthday . . . it was a must, and whenever I did visit or run into them both Inge and Knud would have a hug and smile for me. At age ninety, after a life of raising 5 children, working hard and oh so many trips and adventures, one really shouldn't be sad .. Inge lived her life to the fullest . . . But, I am sad, there's a hole in my life, someone is missing. . . Sleep Peacefully Dear Inge, you definitely deserve a rest. I love you and will NEVER forget you . . . . . • I have known Mr. and Mrs. Markmann since I was small, as a member of the local Scandinavian community. She made a Norwegian-style wedding cake for us in 2000, pieces of which still sit in our freezer. I will have to bring some of it out for the children tonight and tell them all about it. Condolences to the family; hers indeed was a life well-lived. - Posted by: Karen Kampen, Andrew Davidson, Angela, Ryan, and Sarah (Family Friend) on: Jul 16, 2014

  • My sympathies to the Markmann Family....I will always remember Mrs. Markmann loading up all the "Stranmillis Gang" in her car and taking 6, 7, or 8 of us to the Oasis on hot summer days!! She was a wonderfully kind lady. I remember her baking, sleeping in the tent in the backyard and late tea in the evening. So many memories, she will be missed. My apologies, I will not be able to attend the service. - Posted by: Val Soppet (Family Friend) on: Jul 15, 2014
