CPL. KEN BARKER It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ken, our beloved husband, father and brother. Ken will forever be remembered by his wife Shari, daughter Kelly and son Sam. Also mourning his passing are siblings Chris (Debbie), Sandy (Glen), Lynda (Jan), Cindi (Larry), Bill, and Wendy, brothers-in-law Doug (Mona) and Bob (Lisa), mother-in-law Gwen Groff and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Helen and Stanley, brother-in-law Robert Walder, father- in-law Al and his much loved police service dog Axa. Ken was born on March 19, 1963, the youngest of seven children. He was raised in Fort Garry and attended Ralph Maybank, Pembina Crest, and Vincent Massey Collegiate. He graduated with a BA (honors) from the University of Manitoba. In 1987 he began his career in Nanaimo with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. In 1990 Ken and Shari relocated to Winnipeg to be close to his mother when she became ill. At that time Ken chose another career path and served with the Winnipeg Fire Dept. from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, Ken returned to the RCMP and eventually fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a police dog handler. His postings then included Ethelbert, Selkirk, Surrey, Dauphin, Portage la Prairie and Headquarters of D-Division in Winnipeg. Ken was a highly respected member of the RCMP, he worked with the Emergency Response Team and was awarded the Queens Jubilee Medal, the RCMP Long Service Medal and he received a Commissioners Commendation for Bravery. Ken loved camping at Rushing River with his family, our ski trips with the Heddens and Swandels, watching Kelly and Sam on the ice, lounging at the Barker's pool, the camaraderie of his colleagues as well as any time spent with his dogs. He was known for his fondness of shopping, sense of style, love of music, above all The Rolling Stones, all things hockey including the Oilers, and cooking for his family, friends and colleagues. He was quick witted, had an awesome sense of humour and loved a good laugh. Ken suffered a long battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. So many people reached out to him but as is common with PTSD, he would withdraw and isolate himself. A special thanks to Mark Kelly for his support to Ken and Shari, and to Dr. Neil Anderson, Dr. Alla Kirshner and Robert Davis for their professional help and really caring for Ken. Thank you as well to members of the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service and Winnipeg Police Department that tended to Ken. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Families of the RCMP for PTSD Awareness c/o rcmp-f.ca. or Little Warriors. A celebration of Ken's life will be held on Friday, July 18 at the St. Vital Catholic Church at 1629 Pembina Hwy. at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the Masonic Centre 420 Corydon Avenue.

  • My sincere condolences to the Barker family. - Posted by: Eric SHEWAN (Retired OPP Senior Constable) on: Feb 14, 2017

  • I am not a family member friend or associate of Constable Barker but I am a member of the public that this brave RCMP officer helped so often in his career. I hope you don't mind my adding my comments but I was so sad when I read of this officer taking his own life. I just wanted to express my sincere condolences to all family members friends and fellow officers. Such a horrific crime to have witnessed and even more tragic our government did not do enough to help our First Responders who are so bravely running to crime scenes that everyone else is running away from. I am so so sorry and you all have deepest sympathies from so many of us in Vancouver. May Constable Barker now rest in peace. - Posted by: Stephanie LA Porta () on: Feb 27, 2016

  • Although I had not seen Ken for several years and had unfortunately not heard of his passing until today, I wanted to pay my respects to the Barker family. I worked with Ken in both Manitoba and later in Surrey, British Columbia. We quarried together in Manitoba in the mid nineties with the Police Dog Section. Ken was a top notch policeman. I enjoyed every minute I spent with Ken on the job and off. I am very sad to read to about the circumstances of Ken's death. I had the highest regard for Ken as a man and a professional. I can only wish for him to be now in peace. - Posted by: Mark Catto (Past Colleague) on: Jan 20, 2016

  • Dear Shari, Kelly and Sam, On behalf of all of the members of The Mounted Police Professional Association Canada, I want to extend our deepest condolences to you all on the passing of your husband and father, Ken. Ken was a highly regarded and well-respected member of the RCMP – both during active service and retirement. He had an exemplary career with the Force, which was evident by his commendations for bravery and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. Ken was also an excellent RCMP dog handler, who was admired by many for his professionalism and dedication to his work. The job of a dog handler is not an easy one, but he did it with pride, humour and with a true sense of duty to the citizens he was sworn to serve. Those that had the honour and pleasure of working with Ken are deeply saddened by his passing and share in your grief. Ken was also a fighter. He fought the battle against Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as best he could and it is clear that the support he had from you and his extended family helped to bolster him in that struggle. You all played a key role in helping him get through each day. Unfortunately, as many of us know, PTSD is a tireless enemy and as hard as we fight, sometimes that enemy cruelly takes our loved ones from us. Our members will never forget the battle you and Ken fought and we admire your strength, courage and immense love for one another. As the days and weeks ahead come and go, I pray that the memories of happier times – of all the things that made Ken special to all of you – sustain you during this incredibly difficult time. We are here for you, so please do not hesitate to reach out if you need support or a shoulder. You are forever part of the RCMP family and we will unendingly hold you in our thoughts and prayers. • I did not know Ken or Shari personally but your story deeply touches my heart. Shari, I heard your interview on CBC earlier this week and I appreciate your advocacy for removing mental health stigma in this profession. My husband is an officer and we have a young family, I can only imagine what he deals with on a regular basis. Hearing your interview opened up a new dialogue in our home and I know other services are also focusing on mental health impacts of policing. Thank you very much for sharing your story to such a wise audience. It has helped my family immensely. - Posted by: Jennifer Dean () on: Jul 23, 2014

  • I was shocked and greatly saddened to see Ken's photo in an article this past weekend in an Ottawa paper on the subject of RCMP suicides. Ken was a troop mate of mine at the RCMP Academy in Regina in 1987. He was a sharp member and quite a character, and I had the feeling then that he would make a fine officer. From the comments that I see here from co-workers that was obviously the case. I worked in other parts of the country than Ken, but had the opportunity to catch up with him a few years back during the last federal election. I had occasion to work with Ken at that time as part of my duties on the Prime Minister's security detail. It was like going back in time, and his old personality shone through. My sincere sympathies to family, friends, co-workers, and anyone else hurting from this tragedy. Too young to go, he will no doubt be sorely missed. - Posted by: Richard (Troopmate) on: Jul 22, 2014

  • Shari and family, my heart breaks for you and your family. My heart aches for everything that Ken went through and my deepest condolences go out to you. Although I didn't know Ken, I feel a closeness in the 'work' that we chose to do. I thank you for speaking openly about PTSD, mental health and suicide, it does make a difference. • It is with the greatest of sadness and sincere sympathy that I make a reconnection to your family. Ken visited our Grade Two class with his dog when Sam was in our class and for a number of years after. In my many pictures of special moments and events, I have a picture of Ken with his dog...wondering if it could be Axa? I recall how amazing Ken was with the dogs and how special his presentations were for the students. He was such a caring person with outstanding talents. After all these years, I can still see his smile and how proud he was of Sam and Sam of him. • I met Ken in a PTSD treatment program. He was a very kind and gentle soul struggling with those inner demons brought on by trauma. I hoped you would find some kind of inner peace some day. My heart is heavy to hear how the world has lost such a wonderful man. My thoughts go out also to your family and friends who lived your struggle with you. PTSD takes it's toll on families and they to have to live with its side effects. I too almost lost my family. Heroes in life..... - Posted by: LAAB (Friend) on: Jul 21, 2014

  • I only knew Ken for a short amount of time when I first arrived at Surrey Detachment as a recruit. What I remember about Ken is that he was everything a police officer should be. Quick to smile and slow to anger, he treated everyone he encountered with respect and dignity. A professional in every sense of the word. • I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Ken. We worked together on many occasions as members of the Saskatchewan and Manitoba R.C.M.P. Tactical troops. Ken was without a doubt one of the finest police officers and people I have ever had the honour of knowing. He went out of his way to enhance esprit de corps between the two teams. Always a very caring and compassionate man, he attended my father's funeral and the kind words and his presence were very consoling. Ken was a friend and a true gentleman. • Dear Shari and family: My heart breaks for you in the loss of your husband, father and friend. I did not know Ken, but my father knew of him as he is a retired RCMP officer as well. I unfortunately know all too well the suffering that comes with PTSD, I wish more could be done to help those that suffer as well as supporting their loved ones. Know that many of us are here for support and a shoulder to cry on. May Ken continue to watch over you and your family from above and hopefully he has found his peace. • I too struggle with PTSD from an attack. I know what it feels to struggle with the PTSD pain, flashbacks. I am a strong person and many times I felt like ending my life during the first few years. We as a society need to recognize mounties, police, veterans and people that survived a crime are not toss aways. There is something wrong if people in these jobs are scared to get help in fear of being ridiculed based on their ignorance and lack of understanding. People have NO idea what it's like to have PTSD and once you do you are forever changed with a disability. It's amazing that if people don't see a gaping wound then people have to be fine - Just because people can't visibly see an issue does NOT mean it doesn't exist. This is a daily struggle for anyone that has PTSD and I'll tell you it is not fun and wasn't welcome but it is here to stay until I and everyone can be helped to understand it and how to deal with it. I am truly saddened for your loss. I hope Ken's stolen life will be an eye opener to the government that things need to be changed. The GOVERNMENT says they offer help but they truly are not offering much if any help for people that struggle with PTSD. May Ken's soul rest in peace! - Posted by: Nicole (None) on: Jul 18, 2014

  • Dear Shari and family words cannot express the pain and sorrow that you must be feeling. We first met you in clear lake Manitoba at the camp ground. We had a wonderful summer evening sitting around the camp fire. Later on I got to know Ken through Josee my wife and a fellow colleague of Ken's I had coffee with him at the Timmy's on route 90. Ken was a wonderful and kind person, I enjoyed chatting with him. What he went through was horrific and truly painstaking. His journey on earth is now over, but his legacy will live on forever. He is needed somewhere else now and will carry on the great things that he did here. May you find comfort, love and strength from those around you. Rest in peace and be forever free. Kindest Regards, Randall and Josee - Posted by: Randall Smolinski and Josee Jolicouer (Friend colleague ) on: Jul 18, 2014

  • Our deepest sympathy to you, Shari and family. Ken was a good person and an excellent policeman. I very much enjoyed working with him in Selkirk and have many fond memories of those times. May the love and support of those close to you bring strength during this difficult time. John & Iva - Posted by: John & Iva Joslin (Friend & Co-worker) on: Jul 18, 2014

  • I met Ken while we were both in the PTSR program and I could see how badly he wanted to heal...but I could also see how much pain he was in. I too have often wished that I had cancer as opposed to PTSD because the stigma is almost harder to bear than the anxiety/depression that follows trauma. I hold those in my heart who have taken their own lives as a way of coping (my brother included)and it reminds me that I need to be very gentle with myself and my emotions and to keep trying to be as healthy as I can be, mentally and physically. It is in this way that I will honour Ken as I know he would appreciate that. - Posted by: Grace Girard (Friend) on: Jul 18, 2014

Rest in Peace my friend! - Posted by: Lisa Franklin (Cousin) on: Jul 17, 2014

  • We Canadians never truly appreciate the toll police officers take in keeping our homes, lives and loved ones safe. While I did not know Mr. Barker or his family I do want to thank him for his service and thank the family for their bravery in sharing his story so that others may seek help. God bless. - Posted by: Carmen (none) on: Jul 17, 2014

  • I am so sad to hear of Ken's passing. I last saw Ken (and Shari) close to 35 years ago when we attended Vincent Massey Collegiate. Like Ken, I too followed an RCMP career path. It is a rewarding career choice, however, one that can be very trying at times. My thoughts go out to Ken's family. - Posted by: Brian Glover (School Mate) on: Jul 17, 2014

  • I was deeply, deeply saddened to hear of Ken's passing. I had the immense privilege to have worked with him at many CIT deployments, searches & EDU sweeps. Ken was the first to tell me of my transfer away from Manitoba. My most sincere condolences to Ken's family. I will miss you Ken, you were one of the very best. Rest in peace. • My condolences to the Barker family for their loss. Ken you were a kind man who cared about people. You were there when I was in need and it is in sadness that we could not do more for you and yours. You were much loved by your colleagues at work and will be missed. - Posted by: Dave (Friend, co-worker ) on: Jul 17, 2014

  • Our heartfelt condolences to Shari, Kelly and Sam. As a police officer Ken was beyond reproach. His love of dogs and his commitment to the PSD program was that of determination. As a hockey player he was our only hope in staying close to the competition for the ad hoc RCMP vs Pine Creek hockey games. We will always have fond memories of Ken. - Posted by: Ken and Rebecca Aspen (Co-worker, friend) on: Jul 17, 2014

  • I got to know Ken a little this past Vincent Massey hockey season watching our sons on the ice. I remember in particular a conversation that I started by stating what a great defensive player Sam was, his eyed lit up with pride and thanked me for saying so, he told me that he always looked forward to watching his son play. Rest in peace Sir. - Posted by: Barend (Hockey parent) on: Jul 17, 2014

  • We were shocked and saddened to hear about Ken. He was the Winnipeg cousin who came out to live in B.C. for awhile, and we loved having him... We looked forward to his visits, and enjoyed Shari and their kids coming to chase chickens at the farm. Ken had a special place in my father's heart, there was a strong connection there, perhaps something to do with Auntie Helen. He would often visit my parents and my children remember him bringing out his beautiful dog. Ken was a gentle, kind-hearted man, but he had such strength and presence. This is how we will lovingly remember him. - Leslie and family - Posted by: Leslie Franklin Sim (Cousin) on: Jul 17, 2014

  • As a D division dispatcher and ERT scribe I had lots of contact with Ken. I feel sure in saying there was never a better PDS handler for the comm centre to call out, three nights in a row at one point, and never a better guy to talk to after. Total respect for Ken as he always had for others. So sad to hear of his passing. - Posted by: Dale Sylvestre (Coworker) on: Jul 16, 2014

  • Dear Shari & Family, Words cannot express the deep sadness we and I'm sure you're all feeling at this time. Ken was by far the most kindness man we had the pleasure of knowing. He could bring a smile or laugh everytime we were together. My only regret is that we didn't spend a lot more time together in the more recent years. He will always be in our thoughts and hearts. Wishing you and the whole family our prayers and deepest condolences. Henry & Cheryl de Moissac - Posted by: Henry de Moissac (Friend) on: Jul 16, 2014

  • I had the honour of working with Ken in D division. Ken would always come for a visit bringing Axa to the OCC. Always a smile, never a harsh word or angry voice when called out any time, any day. He was the epitome of what an RCMP officer should be. He touched everyone he met in a positive way. I feel so very sad 'we' couldn't help him in his struggle. I pray that your family finds strength in all those who cared for Ken. My thoughts and prayers are with you - Posted by: Karen Krasicki (Co-worker) on: Jul 16, 2014

  • I worked with Ken in Nanaimo. He was a kind caring police officer and more importantly dedicated to his family. This was proven when his mom got ill and he made the decision to leave the RCMP and move home to be close to his mom. I would like to acknowledge the family for sharing Ken's battle with PTSD and hope it helps others. My thoughts and prayers are with you Sincerely Sheryl Armstrong - Posted by: Sheryl Armstrong (co-worker ) on: Jul 16, 2014

  • A good man. I remember a time when we were pursuing a stolen vehicle, back when the RCMP was not as risk adverse as now. Ken came to back us up and somehow in his PSD truck he became the lead vehicle, which isn't exactly the recommended method. He was one of the first to the vehicle and assisting in arresting the suspects. Having worked with several PSD members, Ken stood out among the police service dog program in a unit that has many outstanding members. You always felt confident when you knew Ken was coming to back you up whatever the situation. - Posted by: JP Tremblay (work) on: Jul 16, 2014
