Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySIGRIDUR STEFANIA NIELSEN 1931 - 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sigridur Stefania Nielsen (Sigga) (nee Stefanson) who passed away peacefully on Monday, July 14, 2014 in Gimli, Manitoba at the age of 83. Sigga is survived by her husband Jorgen Nielsen of Gimli, son Kurt Nielsen of Onoway, Alberta, daughter Karen Nielsen of Winnipeg, and leaves behind many relatives and friends who loved her. Sigga was born in Gimli on Third Avenue on February 4, 1931, daughter to Bjorn and Helga Stefanson. She attended the Arnes school just north of Gimli and eventually went on to join the Canadian Armed Forces rising to the rank of Sergeant. While in the army Sigga attained her skills in the medical field eventually settling in Winnipeg, becoming the ward administrator for the Health Sciences Centre for 20 years. Sigga was involved in many charities and had contributed to the Johnson Memorial Hospital, Gimli Community Health Centre for many years and had received awards of appreciation from the Interlake Regional Health Authority. At Sigga's request there will be a Celebration of Life held at a later date in lieu of a funeral service at this time. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Gimli Community Health Centre, 120 6th Ave., Gimli, MB R0C 1B0. Sigga's family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Patel and the wonderful nurses at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Gimli for their support in her final days. I was fortunate to meet John and Sigga recently. They both opened there doors to me and really accepted me in their life. I had many great visits with them and enjoyed meals, including a traditional Icelandic Christmas dinner.I wish I could have spent many more evenings visiting in Gimli. I miss them bother and regret I will never see Sigga again in this life. Thank you Sigga for your time. My sincere condolences to John, Karen and Kurt. Dear Kurt and family, Sorry for the loss of your mom. Good memories of her when we were kids. I also remember that my Grandma and her worked together "at the General" and shared many secrets together. How lucky you were to have your mom well into her 80's.
