DR. JOHN HARRINGTON
Born: Jul 13, 1926
Date of Passing: Jul 19, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. JOHN HARRINGTON Peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2014, Dr. John Harrington passed away at the age of 88 years after a short stay in hospital. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Moyra, of 62 years, sons Christopher, Neil (Dale), David, and Simon (Angie), daughter Linda (Edward) Sellers, grandchildren Sara, Iain, Jane, Danielle, Katharine and Maggie, and his sister Mavis Kerr and her family. John was born in Penrith, Cumbria in the beautiful English Lake District on April 13, 1926, the only son of Sarah and John Harrington. His father was the town butcher and John spent much of his youth on his grandparents' farm "Redhills". He had fond memories of the farm and loved to share them with his family. After completing his MD at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland (where he met Moyra), John went on to specialize in Ophthalmology. He practiced with the British military overseas and in civilian settings in both England and Scotland before immigrating to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with his family in 1967. John loved his chosen profession. He joined the Manitoba Clinic in 1967 and practiced there for 41 years until his retirement in 2008. As a young man, John enjoyed taking his family out to hike and explore in the hills of the Lake District. One of John's reasons for moving to Canada was his love of the great outdoors and once here he liked nothing better than tramping in the woods or boating on its lakes and at the end of the day perhaps bringing home a grouse or a fish or two for supper. The family had a cottage on Clearwater Bay for over two decades and Dad loved puttering around the cottage and taking his grandchildren sailing and fishing on Lake of the Woods. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Victoria Hospital 4 South for the kind and compassionate care they provided Dad during his final days. As he wished, a private family ceremony will be held to celebrate Dad's life. In lieu of flowers, donations to the C.N.I.B. would be appreciated.

Having the good fortune of growing up in River Heights,I chummed with Chris and Neil. With basketball and our beloved volleyball as the conduit, we spent a significant percentage of extra curicular time together. It was through that social bond that I had the pleasure of meeting John Harrington. He would support any and all shared activities, providing we behaved appropriately. That was the early 70's. In 2004,when I required a complete opthamalogical assessment for newly trialed medication, I was ushered down the maze leading to one of my most enjoyable appointments in recollection! Dr.Harrington took 2 minutes to record some of my history: another for the compulsory A E G.....etc. Chart. He said," Yes, well that's got it, then", and we chatted about his family and love of his time at the clinic for the subsequent 30 minutes. He was an "old school" attention to detail doctor, who truly cared about his patients. He will be missed, but not forgotten. - Posted by: Craig Mackie (patient) on: Jul 28, 2014
