DOROTHY (DOT) WERSCHLER Dorothy (Dot) Marie Werschler was called to her Lord and Saviour on July 26, 2014 at University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. Dorothy leaves to mourn her children Jim (Kathie) of Regina, Debbie (Clancy) McCann of Edmonton, John (Kelly) of London, Ontario, her grandchildren Jeffery, Jaime, Jennifer, Becky, Cory, Nikki and Kimberly and her great-grandchildren Brooke and Kiran. She also leaves her brother Carl of Mechanicsville, Virginia as well numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth, father Emil and her mother Clara. Dot was born in Espirito Santo, Brazil on January 6, 1935 while her parents were Lutheran missionaries. Her family returned to the United States in 1945. Dot finished her high school and two years of college at Concordia in Seward, Nebraska obtaining her teaching certificate. She taught school in the US from 1955-56 before marrying Ken on June 24, 1956 in Spring Valley, Minnesota. She resumed teaching in 1962 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and did so until 1971. In 1972 the family moved to Regina and Dot began work as a realtor which she did until 1979 obtaining her FRI designation. Ken and Dot moved to Winnipeg in 1988 when Ken was elected the first Treasurer of the newly formed Lutheran-Church-Canada. Ken and Dot were very active in the Church. Dot was the choir director in both Yorkton and Regina and served on the building committees of churches in Regina and Winnipeg. She was involved with the Kinettes Club in Tisdale, Yorkton and Regina where she served as President and Treasurer. She was a very active gardener taking care of huge vegetable gardens in Yorkton and Regina and when she moved to Winnipeg maintained a significant amount of flowers and pots while helping Ken with his roses. They won numerous awards and ribbons for this. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking and baking. In December 1996 shortly after returning from a conference in Florida, Ken suffered a massive stroke which left him severely disabled. Dorothy dedicated her life to taking care of Ken keeping him at home and caring for him daily. She kept him at home until she suffered a stroke in 2011 and was unable to do so any longer. Without a doubt this dedication to her partner was very difficult on her physically and certainly took years off of her own life but her dedication to taking care of Ken was the most important work she ever did. After Ken's death in 2012 Dorothy remained in the family home but began to deteriorate physically and was in and out of hospital until she no longer could care for the home. She moved to Edmonton in December 2013 living in an assisted living complex which was close to her daughter's home until her death. The family would like to thank the numerous people from the Church for their kindness and concern shown to Dorothy during her difficult times. The family gratefully wishes to decline any flowers and for those so wishing to make a donation in Dot's honour can do so either to St. James Lutheran Church Building Fund, Lutheran Church Canada Missions or to the Diabetes Association. There will be a celebration of Dorothy's life at Saint James Lutheran Church, 871 Cavalier Drive, Winnipeg, MB, on Tuesday August 5, 2014 at 10:45 a.m. Bardal Funeral Home and Crematorium 204-774-7474 Condolences: www.bardal.ca

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I met Dorothy when I would go to visit my mom, Clara Martens. My mom and Dorothy were very good friends and did a lot for each other. I loved looking at all her roses. I remember going to visit her when I went to see my mom, just to say hi. I remember one winter, when Dorothy was in the hospital, in the winter, my mom would go to Dorothy's to check the mail. Mom was 80 something and would walk on the icy road to get the mail, every day. That is how much Dorothy meant to mom. She will be greatly missed, by mom and me. - Posted by: Anne Martens (My mothers friend) on: Aug 05, 2014
