JOHN ALAN KELL
Born: Mar 18, 1933
Date of Passing: Aug 11, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN ALAN KELL March 18, 1933 to August 11, 2014 Peacefully, this kind, generous, intellectual and gentle man left all who loved him and cared about him to mourn his passing and celebrate his life: Sonia ("Sonnie") Umanoff his partner of 23 years, loving daughter Marcia Parker (Barry), son Gordon (Tricia), sister-in-law Ruth Kell, nieces Lora Lee LaFortune (Guy), Sharda Wheelhouse (Jack), grandnephews Rhen Hallett (Candice), Jae Hallett (Tracy), Jean Pierre LaFortune, grandniece Micheline Loiselle (James), cousins Marie Graham, Pamela Peden (Ross), Allison Batt (Dennis), Laura Lee Graham (Rob), James (Denise), Sonnie's family in Florida and New York, and all his Winnipeg friends. John was born and grew up a proud "Pegger" on Queenston Street, attended Kelvin High and graduated with his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Manitoba. After a long and rewarding career as the Institutional Equity Trader with the Investors Group, John retired, sold his home on Riverwood Avenue and eventually relocated to the Canoe Club where he was well liked for his quick wit and repartee. John was indeed a Renaissance man. As a lover of fine arts, he could often be found at performances of opera, ballet, live theatre or concerts. John satisfied his penchant for learning of other cultures with extensive travelling of Europe, Canada and the United States of America. John was the "Tennis Governor" at the Canoe Club during the 1950s and maintained an avid interest in improving his golf game and later mastery of Sudoko. John also maintained a keen and well versed interest in both Canadian and American military history. He proudly flew his Canadian flag, but allowed a small American flag next to it. He fought stalwartly against his incapacitating and perfidious diseases with a smile, good humour and all the physical and inner strength he could muster. "These were the best years of my life" were his last words to his beloved Sonnie as he held her hand and his lips would gesture "I love you" when his voice failed him. He is now reunited with his two adored brothers Wilfred (1942) and Stanley (2008). We would like to thank his very devoted health care professionals Richard, Emile, Christy, Ricardo, the nurses at St. Boniface hospital and Dr. Vincent Taraska for their exceptional care and compassion during John's illness. John, you will always be in our hearts. Memorial service will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg with reception to follow. We were sad to learn our dear neighbor John passed away in August 2014. John was a great neighbor to us 12 years ago on Riverwood Avenue, before we moved to Alberta. We thoroughly enjoyed John's conversation and visits. John's love of plants showed and for a few years we would receive bunches of orange Japanese lantern cuttings and sometimes they would come with a bottle of homemade wine! John and Sonnie loved to visit our young children and the kids enjoyed hollering over to John across the street to get him to wave and say "Hi"! They still have the teddy bears Sonnie and John gave them. John gave us lovely memories to cherish forever. - Posted by: Gerald, Cheryl, Alexa and Kale Trylinski (Neighbors from Riverwood Ave) on: Jan 15, 2015

We met in the late '70s. It was business first and friendship very soon thereafter. In recent years we saw each other infrequently but his face, voice, joy and sense of humor will always be with me. There are few people that have crossed my path over the years that I can say I'll really miss but he is surely at the very top of that short list. God hold you close. - Posted by: Bob Sztam (Friend) on: Aug 21, 2014

I will never forget the look on John's face when we walked into his retirement party with us. He was so loved and respected. The world has lost a very special and wonderful man. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Lisa Bjerring (Co-worker at Investors Group) on: Aug 21, 2014

We were very fortunate to meet John and Sonnie as neighbours on Riverwood Avenue. Over many years we always looked forward to our reunions after the long winter was over and they returned from the south. John always set his sites on making his yard and home look pleasant and inviting and the care he took with his flowers attest to his sentimental and appreciative heart. We loved sharing a glass of wine with Sonnie and John. Talking about family, travelling and life. Our thoughts are with his partner Sonnie and both of their families during this time. - Posted by: Rosemary Friesen & Mario De Rosa (Neighbours and Friends) on: Aug 20, 2014

Guy and I wish to send our condolences to Sonnie, Uncle John's partner of many, many years. I know that the two of them spent many happy years traveling around the world together. Also condolences to his son Gordon and family and his daughter Marcia and family. Myself, my sister Sharda and our mom, Ruth Kell, his sister-in-law, were all very fortunate to have been able to talk to Uncle John at the beginning of July. It was the first time that all 3 of us had talked to him on the same day. I will miss our little chats on the phone and the many e-mails that I received over the years. Sonnie, I know that you loved Uncle John very much and over the years the two of you shared many happy memories together and these memories will last you forever. Love, Loralee and Guy Lafortune. - Posted by: Loralee Lafortune (Neice) on: Aug 20, 2014

John and I worked the same kind of job but for different institutions. With family connections in Winnipeg. I was often in the city and would always meet John for lunch or dinner. He was always kind, funny, gallant and interesting. He was a true gentleman in the old sense of the word. My deep smpathies to Sonnie and to his family. - Posted by: Bonnie Dvorchik (business colleague) on: Aug 19, 2014

I was saddened to learn of John's passing. I worked with John in the last 10 years of his career. He was a fine gentleman, fair and caring and he walked home every day ! I have nothing but fond memories and respect for the man. I am sorry that I am unable to attend the service. - Posted by: Scott Penman (Former colleague at Investors Group) on: Aug 19, 2014
