JAMES KENNETH HEAPS Peacefully on August 20, 2014 at Oakville Hospital, Jim Heaps passed away at the age of 86 years. Jim will be dearly missed by his children Blair Heaps (Candy) of Pinawa, MB and Brenda Chisamore (Darcy) of Burlington, ON; grandchildren Jessica, Ainsley, Troy and Jason; great-grandchildren Ariana, Ava and Taylor. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Rita in 2010 and his brother, Bill in 1990. Survived by sisters-in-law Connie Heaps and Audrey Steven, and several nieces and nephews. Jim was born in Canora, SK on June 10, 1928, the second son of Ken and Effie Heaps. Ken was a CNR station agent and as a result they moved often. It was while living in Grandview, MB that Dad met the love of his life, Rita, and they were married on June 10, 1949. Jim began his career at CNR in 1946 in Grandview as a telegraph operator. After many postings in MB and SK, Jim and Rita settled in Winnipeg where their children were born. As was common with railway families of that generation, Mom and Dad moved often, living in Saskatoon, The Pas, Dauphin, London, ON, Toronto, Moncton, NB and then back to Toronto in 1973. Dad retired in 1988 and they remained in Oakville, ON. Dad moved to Tansley Woods Retirement Community in Burlington in 2013 to be closer to Brenda and Darcy. Jim had many interests over the years including years of dedicated service in the Shriners, golf, photography, and The Morse Telegraph Club. A special thank you to the caring and compassionate staff at Tansley Woods and the Oakville Hospital. Memorial service will be held at Glen Oaks Memorial Chapel, 3164 Ninth Line, Oakville, on Wednesday, August 27, with visitation at 12:30 p.m., followed by a service at 1:00 p.m., with reception to follow. In Jim's memory, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made on line to Shriners Hospitals Canada at www.oakvilleshrineclub.ca Online condolences can be made at www.glenoaks.ca

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I was a close friend of Jim's wife, Rita, for over 20 years. We enjoyed playing bridge and attending a club of mutual interest. Jim was a caring and loving husband to Rita and I enjoyed his company many times when we played bridge at their home. JIM WAS A VERY COURTEOUS, KIND AND ENGAGING PERSON. He was a very involved family man and provided excellent care for all of them. I am sorry for the loss of your father, Brenda, and I trust he didn't suffer long. I thank you very much for contacting me. - Posted by: Ella McElroy (Friend) on: Aug 23, 2014

  • Jim was the first Chief I worked for when I was a telegraph operator on the CNR in The Pas. He was a fine man and a well respected railroader by all who knew him. A no-nonsense, classy man. He inspired me to become a Chief dispatcher. Although his key may now be "silent" he will be kindly remembered. - Posted by: Trevor Wilson (Friend) on: Aug 23, 2014
