I was truly saddened to learn of Raoul's passing. Raoul was a kind, caring and intelligent gentle man who made a big difference in my life. Raoul was the first department head of Native Studies at the University of Manitoba, and while I was a grad student back in the mid 1970s he hired me to teach a summer course for the then newly established Native Studies department. I subsequently became a professor and have been with the department ever since. Raoul's contributions to the Metis community and to the Department of Native Studies will not be forgotten. Iris and Celeste and family, you are in my thoughts. - Posted by: Emma LaRocque (friend, colleague in Native Studies) on: Oct 15, 2014

Iris: I was truly saddened when Celeste told me about Raoul's passing. I always looked forward to seeing him as his smile always told me that everything was good. Thank you, Raoul, for helping me jack up and level my house when I moved back to Sioux Narrows. I only hope that our fishing trips (with Evan) and our shore lunches (with the family) was adequate to show my appreciation for your kindness. Raoul Mckay was a pretty genuine person. He was my teacher in Shilo Manitoba in the 60's but I was a little older than most students as I repeated grade 12 three times. He never put on airs and it was my privilege to play hockey with him on the same team with other teachers and students. My hockey memories are that he would never pass the puck frustrating the heck out of the rest of us but he was like a bulldog going down the ice. My memories as a student and a worker on the base was that he was most respectful of other people and went out of his way to try to interact with others. He was always kind to me despite my shortcomings and had a special sense of humour with a great grin. What he accomplished after we parted ways speaks to his strong character and caring spirit. Well done Raoul. You made a difference. - Posted by: Bill Blake (former student in Shilo Manitoba in 1966/67) on: Aug 27, 2014
