SYDNEY KIRWAN After a lengthy illness, Calvin Sydney Alexander Kirwan, aged 81, passed away in the early hours of September 11, 2014, at Deer Lodge Centre. Sydney was born on the island of Antigua in the West Indies. He was predeceased by his mother, Rachel, father, Ashley, and sister, Consuelo. Sydney is survived by his loving wife, Sharon, and his three daughters, Dawne (Ron), Simone (Brad), and Sheryl. He is also survived by his aunt, Clothilda, brothers, Kingsford (Agnes), Novelle (Marguerite), and Hilson (Petronella), and sister, Elaine. He is fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Crystal, Courtenay, Nigel, Michelle, André, Theophane, Debbie, Lorraine, Andrew, Gary, Tracy, Kamisha, Carl, Dawn, Laurie, Althea, Traceylyn, Louvincia, Shevaughn, Sonnel, and Hillary, as well as many other family members and friends too numerous to name. Sydney attended the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad, worked in St. Kitts, and then immigrated to Canada in 1956, where he completed a BSc at UBC. He moved to Winnipeg where he worked for Federal Fisheries while pursuing an MSc at the University of Manitoba. Sydney and Sharon were married at St. Margaret's Anglican Church, Winnipeg in 1972. They moved to Yellowknife in 1973 and he worked for the Government of the Northwest Territories in the Department of Economic Development and Tourism. In 1976, Sydney was seconded by the Canadian International Development Agency to Barbados. The family returned to Yellowknife in 1979 and Sydney worked there until 1990. He spent the last three years of his career working in Winnipeg at Federal Fisheries. Sydney was involved with many volunteer organizations throughout his life including: the Afro-Caribbean Association of Manitoba, where he taught dance to the youth; the Caribbean-Canadian Association of Winnipeg, where he volunteered at the pavilion during Folklorama and worked at weekly bingos throughout the year; and the Horace Patterson Foundation, where he served as treasurer for many years. Sydney was also a faithful and dedicated member of the Anglican Church, both in Yellowknife at Holy Trinity and in Winnipeg at St. Margaret's, where he served as a member of vestry, envelope secretary, teller, and greeter. The family is very grateful for the care Sydney received throughout his illness by Dr. Brian Sharkey, Homecare, Palliative Care, by two angels in particular, Christine and Millie, and for the spiritual care provided by Doctors Rod Clifton, Eric Parsons, and Dorothy Young. We also would like to thank the Deer Lodge Centre 6th floor staff for tending to Sydney during his final weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Horace Patterson Foundation (http://horacepatterson.ca). Sydney's funeral will take place on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Margaret's Anglican Church (on the corner of Westminster and Ethelbert).
