LEO MCGINN
Born: Jan 29, 1933
Date of Passing: Sep 10, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLEO MCGINN Peacefully, at 1:23 a.m. on September 10, 2014, with family at his side, Leo McGinn passed away at Kelowna General Hospital at the age of 81 years. Dad is survived by his wife of 54 years, Isabelle and children Carole (Bernie), Michael (Martine), Paul and Anne-Marie (Terry), and five grandchildren Eryn, Maegan, Kaelin, Derek and Rachael. Dad was born on the family farm outside of Charlottetown, PEI on January 29, 1933. Deciding that farming was not for him, Dad pursued his education and graduated from St. Dunstan's University (now UPEI) in 1956. Dad met Isabelle in Ottawa in 1958 and they were married on December 31, 1959. Mum and Dad moved to Manitoba where Dad began his 34 year career in education. Upon retirement, they relocated to Kelowna, BC where Dad quickly entrenched himself in the community, becoming involved in golf, curling and numerous volunteer positions. Dad's faith was very important to him and throughout his life he was very involved with his church, most recently the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic parish in Kelowna. Dad believed that life on earth was just one leg of a longer journey. He embraced God's plans for him and took comfort in His love. Although Dad's final few months were difficult, he never complained and carried himself with dignity and courage. Dad was always organized, practical and pragmatic in life and this was true right to the end. In typical fashion, he had pre-arranged everything for when his time came; one final act of caring for his family. The family would like to thank Dr. Khoo and Dr. Perini and especially Dr. Appleby (and his receptionist, Laura) for the care provided to Dad during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad's name may be made to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation. A funeral mass will be held on September 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 839 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, BC, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Mr. McGinn was Principal at Thomas Greenway Collegiate in Crystal City, MB, when I was a student there from 69 - 73. It takes a special person to work in the school system and I'm sure he made an impact on many lives over the years. My thoughts and prayers are with Isabelle and her family. - Posted by: Ardith Davidson (nee Brown) (Former Student at Thomas Greenway Collegiate) on: Sep 15, 2014

I have such good memories of Leo when he visited Portage as a Field Officer with Manitoba Education. What a wonderful surprise to meet him again when my wife and I attended our first RTAM meeting last Fall. He was always a gentleman, he will be missed. - Posted by: Gary Little (Colleague while in Manitoba) on: Sep 14, 2014

So many great memories of my high school years at Thomas Greenway Collegiate in Crystal City, MB with Mr. McGinn as history teacher and principal. My deepest sympathy to the family. - Posted by: Eleanor Reimer (Hildebrand) (Former Student) on: Sep 14, 2014

Am so sorry Isabelle to lean of Mr. McGinn's passing. He was the principal at TGCI in Crystal City MB when the new high school opened and I was in Grade 10. I remember thinking at the time how strict he was (making all the girls wear skirts to school), but now realize what a valuable life lesson that was. (Considering the dress codes now). And Isabelle, you were a super babysitter for me when I worked at the law office when Sherry was a little girl in the early 1970s. You babysat Sherry, Kristal and Bobby and I appreciated you so much. - Posted by: Marian Ransome (Former student) on: Sep 14, 2014

A truly sincere, earnest soul with a ready smile, Leo was a prince of a man who always made me feel welcome in his home when I'd drop by to see Paul or Mike during my high school years. Years later in Winnipeg, I had many occasions to talk with Leo about current events, the joy he took in being a new grandfather, and (of course) hockey. Leo and Isabelle were friends with my parents for over three decades and together they shared many dinners and special events with our family. We shall always be the richer for having been graced by Leo & Isabelle's presence. My heart goes out to Paul, Mike, Anne-Marie & Carole; but most of all it goes out to Isabelle who has lost her prince. Isabelle, my thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Scott MacNeil (Friend of the family) on: Sep 14, 2014

Leo was one of the finest people I have ever known. We worked together, laughter together and remainder friends for over forty years. In his kind and gentle way, Leo taught me many things about patience, respect and dedication to the task at hand. He is gone to a better place and will never be forgotten by those of us who loved him. Sincere condolences to Isabell and the family. Worked with Leo in education and was always aware of his above the average in attitude, concern and ability. As a true gentleman he will be fondly remembered as a good person who has been a credit to mankind and secular life - as a closing point, what more could you ask of one. Thanks, Leo, with fond memories, for being a wonderful part of my life group. - Posted by: HAROLD McCORT (FRIEND) on: Sep 13, 2014
