CAROL ANNE JONES (nee BODNARCHUK) With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Baba and Sister Carol on Friday, September 12, 2014. Remaining to forever cherish Carol's memory are son Will; daughter Susan (Rolan); grandchildren Aiden and Daryn Farrant; brother Dave (Helen) Bodnarchuk; sister Marg Ohm; sister-in-law Rita Hewak; sister-in-law Bernice Jones; nieces; nephews; relatives and friends, in particular Moe Hogue and Helen Hogue. She was predeceased by her parents John and Margaret; husband Bill; daughter Jeri-Anne; sister Jeannie Cowie (Ron); and brother Art Bodnarchuk. Carol was born in Winnipeg on October 5, 1936. After finishing school she joined the Naval Reserve and became a WREN. As a WREN she met her future husband Bill and eventually married him on February 16, 1957. Not only was Carol a wife and mother, but she had a successful career as a secretary. She became one of the first women to work in the psychology department at Stoney Mountain Penitentiary. Carol became an integral part of the Sweet Adelines singing organization while living in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Later, back in Winnipeg, she enjoyed singing in the chorus and Starlighters quartet. In 1970 she and Bill became loyally involved with the Winnipeg Chapter of the Huntington Society for many years. Carol also worked as an executive secretary and assistant for high ranking officials at the Canadian Forces Base for 20 years in Winnipeg. Once retired from CFB Winnipeg, she relished the opportunity to be actively involved in caring for her two grandchildren, whom she dearly loved. Carol also developed a passion for genealogy, not only for her family, but her husband Bill's as well. They both enjoyed travelling all over the world and visiting with people while investigating their family trees. Carol was a kind, compassionate person who loved to have family and friends around her. Shortly after her husband's passing in 2010 Carol was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This diagnosis did not prevent her from being positive about life as she actively continued to travel and enjoy her limited time with family and friends. The family would like to thank all the caregivers at the St. Boniface Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre for their care and compassion during her illness. Upon Carol's request, no service will be held. She will be laid to rest at the Brookside Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 supported by immediate family and close friends. A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at 1102-605 River Avenue at 2:00 p.m. following the interment. Family and friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol's name may be made to the Huntington Society of Canada, 151 Frederick Street, Suite 400 Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, N2H 2M2. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204.897.4665, is in care of arrangements. wojciksfuneralchapel.com

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • To Carol's family, I was very sorry to come across this obituary. I am very sorry for your loss. I got the privilege to know your wonderful Mom through genealogy. We connected through a website, and found out that her Gr gr grandmother Barbara Shand and my gr gr grandfather were brother and sister. This was a huge and wonderful find for me, because I searched for years for information about her and to find that she had a living relative that was so caring and kind was a super bonus. I didn't know her really well, but she was more than willing to help me find out as much information on the Shand family as her health would allow. Your Mom was very kind and you could tell that she adored her family very much. My sincerest condolences to you all. - Posted by: Sherry Sands () on: Dec 30, 2014

  • I met Carol many years ago when I was working a HSC National Office. Since I retired Carol and I kept in touch once in awhile by email so I followed her journey through cancer a little and also her travels. She was a wonderful woman and dedicated a lot of her time to the HSC cause - she will be missed. Rest in peace Carol. - Posted by: Ann Wipp (Friend) on: Oct 14, 2014

  • My heartfelt sympathy to Carol's family during this difficult time. Carol was a positive force in the fight against Huntington disease both on a local and National level. She worked many hours in Winnipeg for the local Chapter and served on the National Board of Directors. I am happy I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Carol, and I will always remember her smile and caring nature. - Posted by: Sandra Funk (MB Resource Centre Director, Huntignton Society) on: Sep 30, 2014
