ROSE MASON On Tuesday, September 23, 2014, Rose Mason, in her 98th year, passed away at Bethania Personal Care Home. Rose was born in Winnipeg in 1917 and lived most of her life in the West End. She graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute after attending Wellington Elementary and General Wolfe Junior High schools. Later she worked in the Starland Theatre and another old classic Winnipeg movie theatre. During that time she acquired amazing knowledge of movies and movie stars of that era which remained with her all her life. In 1941 she married John Allen Mason of Winnipeg. John spent his entire working career as an employee and then part owner of Dent's English Bacon Company and successor, HMS Foods. During the Second World War, Rose and her first child managed on their own while John was away in the armed services. Rose and John's three sons, Robert, Allan and Donald, were born and grew up in the West End and attended the same schools as their mother had. Rose was an avid sports fan all her life, attending many baseball games in her earlier years and later following the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. She bowled on a regular basis with her father, Alf Jerome, her three sisters, Edith, Phyllis and Shirley and their husbands. She really enjoyed getting together with her whole family. Many good times were had after the bowling games at her home and also at her parents' home on Toronto Street. When Rose had some time to herself she loved to do crossword puzzles. She always had a great love of summer at the lake. As a child, she spent time with her parents and sisters in Malachi, Ontario at the old CNR camps. Later, with John and her children, she spent parts of several summers at Laclu, Ontario where they rented a cottage. In 1970, Rose and John purchased a cottage at Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell. Rose was a good swimmer who loved to try to swim long distances while a family member rowed a boat beside her. Blueberry picking also was a favourite pastime for her. A special thanks to the staff of Bethania for the care that they gave over the last nine years to Rose and also to John, who predeceased Rose in 2010. Rose is survived by her sons Robert (Jennifer), Allan (Heather) and Donald, grandchildren Christopher, Michael (Trish), Kim (Duane) and Todd (Carla), great-grandchildren Kya, Ali, Alexandra, Abigail, Alaska, Sierra and Sadie, and also by her sister, Edith. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

  • I have fond memories of spending many happy hours in the warm and welcoming home of the Masons while growing up with Robert in the 50's. They were wonderful neighbours. May they rest in peace. - Posted by: Ed Zuke (Former neighbour) on: Sep 28, 2014
