BOHDAN EVHEN STEBNICKY The family of Bohdan (Donnie) Stebnicky sadly announces his passing after a brief illness on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Donnie was born in Winnipeg on March 11, 1941 and attended school in Norwood. A brilliant mathematician, he continued his studies at the University of Manitoba and went on to further his education at the University of Cincinnati in pursuit of his Master's degree. Donnie taught Math at both the high school and post-secondary levels in Winnipeg and in England. He was also a devoted personal tutor to many students. Donnie was proud of his Ukrainian heritage. He was one of the original members of the Rusalka Dance Ensemble. He really enjoyed reconnecting with his fellow dancers at Rusalka's recent 50th anniversary celebrations. The "triasunets" performance was so special! He loved family celebrations where he could fondly recall his many adventures with his friends while travelling across North America and Europe. Donnie was a kind, good -hearted and gentle person who loved his family very much. He leaves to mourn his passing Marlene, his two daughters Tara (Chad), Sophie, and his grandchildren Liam and Liriel. He was looking forward to the arrival of another grandchild in December. He is also survived by his sister Luba (John) Ewashko, nieces Patricia Ewashko, Darusia (John) Kozelko, Larissa Solomon, his nephew Laurence Ewashko (Russell), and their families. He will be missed by his friend Johnny, and his Friday night group at Norwood Legion. Donny was predeceased by his parents, Olha and Joseph, his sister Lesia, brother-in-law Vlad, and his in-laws in England. We are grateful to the many people who helped Donnie over the years. We appreciate the kindness and compassion shown to him by his homecare workers. Special thanks to Dr. T. Babick, the staff at St. Boniface Hospital (4th floor and Emergency Department), and, most recently, the staff of the MICU/CCU unit at the Health Sciences Centre, especially Drs. Paunovic and Jacob. Donnie has continued his work as a teacher by donating his body to medical research. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Should you wish to make a donation in his name, please consider the Winnipeg Humane Society, or the Ukrainian Cultural and Education Foundation (Oseredok). VICHNAYA PAMYAT Peace and Love

  • Dear Family Sending you deepest sympathy on the loss of Donnie. His farewell to life seeing the 50th Anniversary of Rusalka would've been something that he cherished. Donnie was an inspiration to all and will be sadly missed. In sympathy Joanne Sarakula & Family - Posted by: Joanne Sarakula (nee Hrycak) (Ex Rusalka Associate) on: Oct 06, 2014

  • It is with great sadness to read about Bohdan's passing today in the Free Press. I always admired Don for his great intellect, passion for Ukrainian Dance and his sense of humor. Don had a huge impact on my brother and me. He inspired us to want to become Ukrainian dancers. Our parents took us to our our very first Ukrainian dance concert at the UNF Hall in Winnipeg and a huge dance competition was taking place. We will never forget Don in his role in the "Boot" (Choboty) dance which was awarded 1st place outperforming the mighty Kalyna Ensemble from Toronto! We were so pumped up that when we came home we started to dance on the kitchen floor. We were only about seven and eight years young. Thank you, Don, for all of your encouragement. Your contributions to the Rusalka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble are legendary as one of the original founding members. We will miss you.
