DR. RAYMOND HAWKINS MB. BS (London), DRCOG, M (FOM) RCP, CCBOM Peacefully on October 1, 2014, Raymond passed away at the age of 83. He is proudly and lovingly remembered by his wife Elizabeth, son Dr. Paul Hawkins and daughter Bronwen Dobson. He will also be remembered by his many close friends and colleagues, in both the medical community as well as through his volunteerism with the Winnipeg Police Department and Royal Canadian Legion. Dr. Ray Hawkins was born and educated in the United Kingdom. He obtained his Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Medicine degrees and a Diploma from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1954 from London University. On graduating, he was appointed the Resident Obstetrics Officer at Charing Cross Hospital, London, after which he served as an army surgeon at the British Military Hospital, Rinteln, Germany for five years. On his return to Britain he was admitted as a member of the Royal College of Physicians (Faculty of Occupational Medicine), London, and delved into the world of occupational medicine, toxicology and environmental medicine with Imperial Chemicals Ltd, U.K. In 1968, Ray immigrated to Canada and became a certificant of the Canadian Board of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and joined Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., being stationed at the nuclear research labs in Pinawa, Manitoba. He was also appointed as a Medical Advisor to the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada. He eventually became the Chief Medical Officer and Head of the Medical Services for A.E.C.L. By Order in Council, Ray also became a Provincial Medical Examiner in the mid 1970s. Ray retired in 1992 and was as busy and energetic as in his younger years. He devoted much of his time as a Divisional Co-ordinator (Division 11, District 1) with the Winnipeg Police Service thoroughly enjoying the camaraderie he shared with the police staff. Ray proudly served with the Royal Canadian Legion in many positions culminating in Branch President. He also found enjoyment and loved spending time in later years gardening and relaxing with his canine friends Tani and Allie. Our thanks to the staff at Middlechurch Home and Seven Oaks Hospital for their care and compassion extended to Ray in his final days. As per Ray's long established beliefs, cremation has taken place and there will be no service or marker. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wildlife Rescue Network Inc., c/o 2 Red River Place, St. Andrews, MB R1A 2V2. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 204-982-7550

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Our condolences from a long lost Cousin in England. Daughter of your Aunty Hilda (Hillman) who was the little sister of your lovely Mother, my Aunty Violet. Having read through your obituary I can see you have a very proud family. You did and gave so much. - Posted by: Margaret Jalowik (Nee Wright) (Cousin) on: Oct 27, 2014

  • Please accept my sincere condolences in the death of your Father and Husband. My husband, Raymond, and I were friends and co-workers with Ray and second wife Alice. More than one glass of wine and pitcher of draft were shared with laughter and great fellowship. Our daughter, Stephanie, took many a walk through the Pinawa gardens with Ray. We will remember his great smile, laughter and blue shirts. - Posted by: Judi Lambert (Friend) on: Oct 13, 2014

  • My sincere condolences go out to Dr. Hawkins family. I am a Constable with the Winnipeg Police Service and "Doc" who we affectionately called Ray, regularly volunteered to assist our unit in various projects that were conducted throughout the city. When "Doc" showed up, you were assured that you were in for a few good laughs. He will be missed. - Posted by: David Huyghe (Winnipeg Police Service) on: Oct 08, 2014

  • I had known Doc, as he was often referred to by many of the officers of the Vehicle Inspection Unit of the WPS where he volunteered on a regular basis, for 5 or 6 years. Doc was always friendly and hard working he enjoyed volunteering with the Police Service and was a valuable asset on many of our inspection programs. Doc you will be missed by all of us that had the pleasure of working along side you...... - Posted by: Brian Hennebury (WPS) on: Oct 08, 2014
