Jimmy James died peacefully in Winnipeg on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Oakview Place Personal Care Home at the age of 89 years. Left to survive Jimmy are his wife Joyce of 30 years; his children, Gayle (John), Craig and Ryan (Darci); 10 grandchildren, Jade, Richard, Colin, Jillian, Whitney, Sam, Zac, Connor, Sofiya and Maxwell; and four great-grandchildren Avery, Brooklyn, Mykayla, and Ella. Jimmy grew up in Memphis, TN. He decided to serve in the American Navy from 1943 to 1946. In 1948 he came to Canada looking for a better life and found it. He began working on the railroad working hard opening doors that were previously closed to those of African American descent. Jimmy was a determined man. He did many different jobs, orderly, bus driver, painter, and was a great fisherman. Jazz, blues and other great black soul music moved him like nothing else. A great dancer, an avid gardener (he loved his greens and tomatoes), he also loved to BBQ. We honour his memory always, he will be missed! In compliance with Jimmy's wishes, there will not be a funeral service. Many thanks to the supportive and caring staff at Oakview Place Personal Care Home. Gail,Craig I remember always going over to your place as a young kid ,by the red river colleage and you guys had that Big dog , dogs Morma Duke and that huge Doberman , hell we could never get in the house cause they always wanted to play lol and going for rides on sunday as my Dad and yours like to hang out since they where both from Memphis and they came to canada togeather in that yello car with the back window that rolled down and leather seats they where white , and dancing playing 45,s and 78 s and alot of other thing , he will be missed luv Robert - Posted by: Robert Bishop (cousin/friend/ father) on: Nov 15, 2014
