Date of Passing: Oct 13, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBERNARDO JOSE TUCCI December 3, 1927 - October 13, 2014 After a challenging struggle, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bernardo Jose Tucci early morning of October 13, 2014 at the Concordia Hospital. Bernardo will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Bianca; and his three daughters Maria Luisa (Brian), Francesca (Curtis), and Paula (Bill) along with his grandchildren Andrew, Jeremy, Sabrina, Nicholas and Shannon. He will be greatly missed by his only cherished sister Matilde in Italy along with brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews in Italy and Winnipeg. Bernardo was predeceased by his father Francesco, mother Maria Luisa (in his early childhood), and brother-in-law Mario. Bernardo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 3, 1927 and later moved to Florence, Italy. After leaving Florence, he met his wife Bianca and they immigrated to Canada in 1955 to join his father and sister in Fort William, Thunder Bay. He began his career working as a draftsman in an architectural firm and pursued his life-long dream of being involved in radio broadcasting. A transfer to Winnipeg enabled him to explore his fond interest in radio and T.V. broadcasting while continuing to work in various architectural firms including GBR Associates, Moody Moore and Partners, along with the T. Eaton Co. His love of producing and broadcasting news and music fulfilled his mandate of bringing warmth of the Italian culture into the homes of thousands of Italian immigrants during the late 1950s through to the 1980s. His distinct voice was easily recognized and became a trademark in the Italian community. In an attempt to further broaden the Italian culture in Winnipeg, he volunteered his time to host his own weekly T.V program called "Ora Italiana" on Cablevision T.V that lasted 24 years. Bernardo had dynamic involvement in many cultural aspects of the Italian community including; being the first president of the "Dante Alighieri Society" (1966), founder and president of the "Christopher Columbus Society" of Winnipeg, and Mayor of the Italian Folklorama pavilion. In Bernardo's later years, he became very reflective, and took great pleasure in his writings. He was a lifelong learner, well read, and continued to have an interest in world affairs. Although our dad was reluctant to have hip surgery, he was willing to undertake the journey necessary to improve the quality of his life. Complications following surgery took his solid mind and body, but his spirit will always remain close to our hearts. We are fortunate that he has left us with a legacy of memories to cherish and strong morals to follow. We are proud that he was a strong pillar in our home and to many in the Italian community. Honouring Bernardo's wishes, a private service with his immediate family has already taken place. Thank you to the staff of the second floor and ICU at Concordia Hospital who helped Bernardo through his challenges. Flowers are gratefully declined, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Bernardo's memory to the charity of one's choice. Family and friends may sign the online condolences at www.greenacresfuneralhome.com. Dad, We'll always remember that special smile, that distinct voice, that caring heart, that warm embrace you gave mom and us everyday, no matter what. We'll always remember the life lessons you taught us. Thank you for filling our hearts with fond memories. Sei sempre nei nostri cuori Ripose in Pace GREEN ACRES Funeral Home and Cemetery (204) 222-3241 Condolences may be sent to www.greenacresfuneralhome.com

Bernardo Tucci was a pioneer in bringing to the newly settled immigrants from Italy a piece of their homeland, a connection to "La Bella Italia". He was the conduit that helped soothe the pain of our parents' heartache of establishing new roots in a foreign and unknown land and longing for the beautiful homeland and families they were forced to leave behind for a better future in Canada. He helped those studying Italian or wanted to know more of the beautiful cultural riches Italy provided with his radio and TV shows. We cannot thank him enough for his tenacity and vision. My father, Primo, would always relate stories of how they braved the cold and elements to raise funds in front of Holy Rosary Parish and convince Italians that this program was important in keeping everyone connected to a far off place they once called home. He will be missed but most, importantly, we are grateful that he chose Winnipeg to establish his life, career and family. Addio Bernardo! Sincerest condolences to Maria and all extended family for a great loss to our community. Through his passion of his beloved radio and TV programs, Bernardo elevated "l'Italianita`" as much in our city as in the hearts of all Italian immigrant homes. You don't know me, but did meet you once, suffice to say at the "bank" where you replaced my sister. As well, on a transfer with the same "bank" I had great pleasure to meet your grandfather (then Italian Vice-Consulate) in Ft William-Port Arthur in 1970 when the two communities amalgamated into the City of Thunder Bay. Bernardo will always be in our hearts, never forgotten. (Tony Garofalo) - Posted by: A (Tony) Garofalo (Acquaintance) on: Oct 19, 2014

To Maria & all of your family. We are saddened to hear of the passing of your father Bernardo. Our most sincere condolences to you all. We remember the good old days when we used to sit around the table for supper and we would make sure the radio was on 6 to 7pm listening to him especially when it came to the dedications. Whenever we would call him to do a request for birthday wishes or wedding wishes, he would say don't worry I will do a really nice dedication for you. And that he did do indeed .... he had such a way of putting the words together that it would melt your heart. he truly was one of a kind. I don't think there will ever be another man just like him. Rest in Peace Bernardo - Posted by: Rosa & Rosario Ferlaino () on: Oct 19, 2014

Bernardo Tucci played an important role in the cultural and social life of Winnipeg`s Italian community. His interests and activities were far ranging. For myself, my family and for many Italians, Bernardo`s radio program was an important point of reference, a source of information and inspiration, a bridge that connected us to our land of origins and cultural formation --- Italy. In this day and age of the internet, cell phones and satellite television where information on Italy is readily available, it is easy to forget that this was not always the case. When Bernardo started his program back in 1959 sources about Italy were few and far between. His initiative constituted an important and defining moment in the cultural and educational development of Winnipeg`s Italian community. Not only, it also provided the emotional nourishment, sense of assurance and familiarity so essential in forging a new life in a different, contradictory and at times incomprehensible environment. To the Tucci family and kin, my wife Anna and I offer our heartfelt condolences. Respectfully, Stanislao Carbone - Posted by: Stanislao Carbone (Friends) on: Oct 19, 2014
