VICTORIA HELEN CHASTKO It is with both sorrow and release that Vicky's family announce a season of passing for a precious wife, sister, mother, grandmother, friend and loved one. May she rest in peace, and rise in glory. At age 72, in the winter of life, Victoria passed quietly in her sleep at the Golden West Centennial Lodge, Saturday, October 18, 2014 to be with the Lord. Vicky is survived by her husband Bernard, brother Nestor (Beverly), sons Lorne (Donna) and Raymond (Karlin), daughters Jaqueline and Valerie (David), and grandchildren, Vanessa, Kari, Westan, Brenden, Noah, Levi, Jonah, Trevor, Stacy, and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Tony Baranyk and Mable Saranchuk (Baranyk) (nee Burtnick), and daughter Charleen. Vicky was born in the spring of 1942 in the Unorganized District of Strathclair. She bloomed into a young woman in the Seech, Herod area where she was raised on the family farm working alongside her brother and parents. She attended Flower School a mile from home and later completed Grade 9 at the Elphinstone High School. Vicky met Bernard, her husband of 54 years, and they were soon married and began to sow a family of their own. Vicky nurtured and raised her five children, in the warmth and temperate summer of life with all of its storms and floods, while working as a waitress at the Concord Hotel and later at the Paddock Restaurant. She completed a commercial cooking course at Red River Community College that helped her prepare meals during the 16 years she worked in home care. In 1999 Vicky retired because of health issues. Vicky enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing cards with family, and Canasta with friends. She passed many hours knitting and crocheting before losing mobility and feeling in her hands and her eyesight began to fail. She loved the outdoors, camping and fishing with family, and watching the changing of the seasons with Bernie in the Manitoba parks and on their many travels. She delighted in the company of the cats and dogs (Sasha and Amber) she cared for throughout the years. In the autumn of life with sight and limb sensitivity diminished she watched a lot of TV - the old black and whites. She always had an appreciation for old movies and TV shows. Both she and Bernie were active in their church where they cultivated many friendships and grew in the faith. Vicky continued to struggle with diabetes both in and out of hospital until she was admitted in April of this year. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff, nurses and doctors at Grace Hospital for the many months of attentiveness while Vicky was under their care. We also want to thank the staff at Golden West for their compassion during her short stay in the last hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CNIB or Canadian Diabetes Association. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life and interment will be held on Saturday, November 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 204-885-9715
