GARNET DOUGLAS WEIR (GARY) February 14, 1946 October 16, 2014 Gary was born at St. Boniface Hospital on Valentine's Day. He lived almost all of his life in Winnipeg, leaving only to obtain a Degree in Physical Education at the University of North Dakota. This led to a life devoted to teaching. Gary taught in a variety of schools for the St. Boniface school division for 30 years. He enjoyed recounting that his most famous student was curler Jennifer Jones. Gary was a natural athlete, good or competent in every sports endeavour in which he participated; including but not limited to hockey, curling, basketball, and table tennis. His greatest attribute was his love of teaching kids. He had an incredible knack of gaining the respect of almost all his students, including the difficult ones to whom he was regularly assigned. He retired from teaching when he was 53. Gary is predeceased by his parents; he is the second son of Muriel Weir (nee Bannerman) and Cam Weir, both of Winnipeg. He leaves behind his brother Robert Weir (Joyce) of Toronto and his sister Patricia Brown (Ken) of Vancouver. Gary was married twice: to Carol in 1973 and to Bernice in 1984. He did not have a family of his own but appreciated his three nieces, Alix, Katie, and Meghan. Gary also had a strong love for dogs and doted on his collie, Shandy, and his west highland white, Chimo. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal services will be held. Gary was a good friend and was well loved by his students. Even though I moved away from Winnipeg many years ago we still maintained contact. I will miss our debates on the respective merits of the CFL compared to the NFL. My thoughts are with you at this time Bernice, as Gary always thought highly of you. - Posted by: Rick Hallstead (friend) on: Oct 26, 2014
