GEORGE WILLIAM BARNET On Monday, October 27, 2014 George Barnet passed away at the age of 79 years. George will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Avis; daughter Michelle (Brian); son Ron (Kent); brother Jim (Laurette); Uncle Russ (Nancy); in-laws and extended family, and his many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Gladys Barnet (nee Smith); sister Mary Jean Robertson; brother-in-law Alex James; brother-in law Gary Erickson; niece Colleen James, and nephew Scott McCracken. Born June 12, 1935 in Winnipeg, George grew up in St. James, he had numerous boyhood adventures with school chums, many of whom remained his good friends all through his adult life. After school, George started work at Air Canada where he met his future wife of 53 years, Avis. He began his working career as a mail clerk, working his way to the Statistics Bureau, Disbursements and then the Payroll computer programming department until his retirement in 1992. George and Avis made good use of their travel passes, vacationing in Jamaica, England, Germany, France, Barbados and Florida. George always enjoyed sports: playing lacrosse, swimming and track as a youth; curling, golf and an office baseball league later on; and taking up roller blading and cross-country skiing after retirement. He continued to golf in retirement and was often in the backyard on summer days practicing his swing. He enjoyed the bridge club with friends, the annual organized and dis-organized picnics at Clandeboye, family reunions and golf trips, annual trips to Mexico, San Antonio and Victoria with good friends Rome and Jan Lipp, daily coffee with his buddies Norm Roberts, Jim Reid and Harvey Hill, work fishing trips, and the many parties and get-togethers. On Friday, October 31, 2014 George's Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at CancerCare Manitoba for their care over the last few years, as well as the doctors and staff at Grace Hospital Emergency and ICU for their care and compassion. If desired, donations in memory of George may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • Although I never worked directly with George, we would frequently meet in the hallways and converse (mostly "guy stuff") and as a result, truly enjoyed his sense of humour and "laissez-faire" attitude.....always refreshing. Thanks, George - Posted by: Denis LeGros (Air Canada retiree ) on: Nov 07, 2014

  • I was saddened to hear of George's passing and my heartfelt condolences to George's family and friends. George was one of the most friendly and upbeat men I had ever met in my life. The world needs more people like him!! - Posted by: Bill Baron (Air Canada Payroll Retiree) on: Nov 05, 2014

  • George was a great friend and mentor to me in my early days at AC...always time to help understand the mysteries of computing in the early 70's. He always shared stories that spoke volumes about his love for his wife, Ron and Michelle, and his many friends. Thank you for his life and RIP George - Posted by: Garth Drake (friend/co-worker) on: Oct 31, 2014

  • Avis and family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Knowing and working with you both for so many years brings back nothing but great memories. Even in retirement I would see George at the lacrosse alumni reunions and always have a good laugh about the old Air Canada days. George and that great smile will be missed. - Posted by: Clarke Peterman ((co-worker)) on: Oct 30, 2014

  • My sympathy goes out to Avis and the family and I shall be thinking of them at this difficult time. It has been many years since I last saw George on one of my visits back to Winnipeg. I see him in some of my old black and white photos of him and the old gang. My memories of a smiling, mischievous young fellow bear out his same attitude to life as he grew older. RIP George. - Posted by: J. R. (Dick) Stooke (Friend of days gone by.) on: Oct 30, 2014

  • Avis, Michelle & Ron, We're so sorry to hear about George's passing. George's love and pride of his family was always so apparent. We both enjoyed working with George - smiles, fun & laughter were always part of the equation. Larry also enjoyed his many "guys fishing trips" with George - fishing, drinking, laughing & BSing! Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Larry & Kathryn - Posted by: Larry Harder & Kathryn McLaughlin (co-workers) on: Oct 29, 2014

  • Avis and Family, we are so sorry to hear about George's passing, he was one of those neat individuals who could strike up a conversation about any subject and make it interesting. Take care of yourself, you are in out thoughts. - Posted by: Leonard and Ruth Kaspick (Friends/family) on: Oct 29, 2014

  • Avis, my heart goes out to you and your family at this very sad time in your life. I am so honoured to have known George when we both worked at Air Canada. He was always so full of life and energy, always teasing and joking..Seeing you and George at Cancer Care and both of us having chemo at the same time brought back alot of memories for both of us...I'm grateful that we had a chance to reminise about old times. The memory of him will forever live in our hearts. - Posted by: Sylvia Bowen (Co-worker at Air Canada) on: Oct 29, 2014

  • Dear Avis, Michelle, Ron & family, We were so sorry to hear of George's passing. We cherish our memories of our first home on Muriel Street and how fortunate we were to have you as our neighbours. May the love and support of your family and friends comfort you in this most difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you . . . • Avis, I am so sorry to hear George has passed on. My condolences to you and your family. George was a great person to work with. Was always in a good mood and willing to share a joke or story about his weekend and family. His barbecue timing was hilarious - hamburgers = 1 beer, steak = 2 beers, chicken = 3 beers. As a supervisor he was the best. He always made me feel like I was working with him, not for him. After he retired, I was lucky enough to be able to run into Michelle quite frequently to get updates on how you both were enjoying his retirement. I'm regretting not making it out to Gaffers to see him and the rest of the C&SS crew following my own retirement. I'll have to remedy that very soon.
