CATHERINE (CATHY) MARY MCNEIL (née HUTCHISON) It is with great sadness that the McNeil family of Winnipeg, MB, acknowledges the passing of Catherine (Cathy) McNeil on October 26, 2014 from pancreatic cancer. She is predeceased by her parents John and Mary Hutchison. Cathy is survived by her husband Paul; children Michael (Jung-ae) and Aidan (Jean-Francois); grandchildren Duncan and Claire as well as brothers Eric (Nancy), Michael (Kate) and Mark (Janet). Born April 11, 1952 in Pine Falls, MB, she moved to Winnipeg in 1970 to attend the University of Manitoba, where she obtained a Bachelor of Home Economics and then a Master of Science. She worked for 15 years for the Provincial Department of Health before leaving to pursue her Ph.D. at l'Université de Montréal. Cathy enjoyed and naturally excelled at a variety of sports. She figure skated, danced, cross-country skied and was a high school provincial badminton champion. Before falling ill, she had recently taken up playing badminton and cross-country skiing with local community groups. She adored being a grandmother and took great joy in spending time with her grandchildren. She loved bringing Duncan to the theatre and watching Claire discover the world, and was so saddened upon her diagnoses to realize that she would not get to see them grow up. Cathy's family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the friends and neighbours who provided company and comfort to Cathy during her illness as well as those who brought wonderful home cooked meals and baked goods to her family over the past few months. The family also wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at the WRHA Palliative Care Program and the Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care Unit for the compassion and care with which they worked to keep Cathy comfortable in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or a charity of your choice are gratefully appreciated. A memorial service for Cathy will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at the Qualico Family Centre, 330 Assiniboine Park Drive. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I have enjoyed my aunt's presence throughout my childhood. I don't have many memories of her, as I mostly saw her when I was very young and my family from Calgary would visit her and my grandparents in the summer. I do remember loving having dinner at her house, and that she was a sunny presence in the family dinners at my grandparents' Cabin in Pine Falls. I'm glad that I could see her again this Fall, and be there with my cousins to provide some happiness for her. She will always be in my heart. - Posted by: Meaghan Hutchison (Niece) on: Nov 02, 2014

  • Throughout my friendship with Michael she was always a caring person with a zest for life. She was always kind to her sons friends and I had many meals at the McNeils house. She will be missed in this world but she brought two children up in it that show the best parts of her. - Posted by: Bryan Rose (Friend with Michael) on: Nov 01, 2014

  • I am shocked and deeply saddened by Cathy's passing. My condolences to her husband, children, grandchildren and her brothers and their families. - Posted by: Rae Griffin(Hutchison) (Cousin) on: Nov 01, 2014
