EDITH ESSERY Edith passed away peacefully, in her residence, in Calgary on November 24, 2014 at the age of 95 years, 164 days. She was born in Winnipeg June 13, 1919 to parents Ida and James McDowell. She was married to Roy Essery in 1946, her husband of 63 years, until his passing in 2010. Edith was predeceased by her sisters Helen and Grace, and her brother Stewart. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Stuart (Mary Lou), Cameron (Carola), Alison (Ken) and Elizabeth, and her grandchildren, Erin, Jamie, Ryan, Cary and Zach. She loved to talk and laugh with people, and share new experiences. Edith looked forward to every day of life, loved travelling, learning and first used a computer and email at age 82. Some of her fondest memories were her many summers spent at the family cabin at Caddy Lake, Manitoba where she loved to pick buckets of wild berries and freeze them for the winter months. Edith's blueberry pies were second to none. She spent most of her life in Winnipeg, and was an avid curler with many winter days spent at the Winnipeg Winter Club. Another passion was the game of bridge, and she thoroughly enjoyed both the social companionship and the challenge. Edith tirelessly gave her time and energy to her family, friends, and the community. She spent several decades volunteering her time with the United Church Women's group in Winnipeg, the St. Agnes Guild and book market, and the Children's Hospital Research Foundation. She regularly delivered meals to seniors for the United Way Meals on Wheels and could be counted on to help elderly friends and family in need. Edith was also a strong supporter of the performing arts, in particular the ballet and symphony companies in both Winnipeg and Calgary. Her life will be celebrated in a funeral service held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6 at the Christ Moravian Church, 600 Acadia Dr. SE, Calgary, AB T2J 0B8. For those attending who want to celebrate Edith's Irish connection, please feel free to wear a little green. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Edith donated annually to the Mustard Seed, Samaritan's Purse and the MS Society. In living memory of Edith Essery, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial Chapel.
