Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCONSTANCE JOAN NEWTON, B.A. M.A. B.Ed. December 30, 1934 - November 26, 2014 Predeceased by parents John W. Newton and Daisy Newton (nee Browning), brothers John and Douglas, and niece Judy. Survived by nephews Doug (Judith), John (Betty) and Roger (Jan), grandniece Glennis (Tom), grandnephews Derek (Mullein), Tristan (Shara), John (Julia), Mark, Matthew and Joel, and great-grandnephews Keir, Leif, Daemon and Aidan, as well as Christine Kroeze and a multitude of good friends and acquaintances. Graduate of United College, University of Manitoba, University of Calgary, Joan loved teaching and saw it as the most creative of professions. In Winnipeg, Joan taught at Miles Macdonell Collegiate, where she was department head for several years, and at Gordon Bell High School. As well she taught in Ottawa and in London, England. She served extensively in many professional organizations and chaired the committee that during the 1980s oversaw the creation and implementation of a new Language Arts curriculum for all students of Manitoba. This work she considered one of her major contributions to education. Since retirement, she had been busy with professional writing, editing, supervising student teachers, evaluating exams, tutoring, and teaching creative writing. She also wrote plays, short stories and poetry. In addition, Joan was an active volunteer in many areas, most particularly several years with CESO and with CHKV. She especially liked helping immigrants and foreign students master English. She cherished her family and was somewhat amused by her change in status from baby of the family to its most senior member. She also greatly valued her friends. Many of them, including those of the old "Cackle Club" from college, she kept in contact with for well over 50 years. Further, she enjoyed travel, music, theatre, and a wide variety of reading. She relished exploring ideas, and learning new things. Discussion delighted her and people to whom she put forth one side of an issue on one day would sometimes be gobsmacked by her arguing a completely different side the next time they met. Donations in Joan's memory will be welcomed by the charity of your choice. Time for remembrance will be at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue. I am so saddened to learn of Joan's passing, albeit two months after the fact, from the In Memoriam pages of OnManitoba, the University of Manitoba Alumni journal. Joan was a distant cousin of mine (a descendant of a sister of my grandfather) whom I would see from time to time on visits to Winnipeg (I live in Ottawa). In recent years our contacts were more often on the phone. I last talked with her in June of 2014. She was ill at that time and we were unable to meet in person, which I now much regret. I corresponded with her over the years on family history, was impressed at how much work she had done on her Newton ancestry and am grateful for several photographs she generously provided of her parents and relations. My condolences to her friends and family. - Posted by: Barrie Burns (Cousin) on: Jan 14, 2015

Our deepest Sympathy to you all, may our Lord Jesus Grant you His Peace and Comfort, as you go through this time. Greeting you with John 3:16 God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that who ever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. We got to know Joan at Grosvenor at the condominium building, she was a real friendly person. We were working there as Caretakers for couple of years. God bless you all, we will pray for you!
