THOMAS MAIN CAPTAIN
Date of Passing: Jan 04, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHOMAS MAIN CAPTAIN 1925 2015 After 89 years of a life well lived, Tom passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 4, 2015. He will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend Muriel Captain (nee Lytle), his children Catherine Captain (late Stephen Wright), Patricia Captain (late Jacques Guerin) and James Captain (Kathleen Captain), his grandchildren Sydney and Alex Wright and his sister Margaret Gillatt. Tom was born and raised in Winnipeg and in 1951 he and Muriel married, spending 63 wonderful years together. Living in Charleswood for close to 60 years, dad took great joy in raising his family, socializing with friends, and being a grandpa. After spending most of his working life with General Electric, he enjoyed every minute of retirement, especially the times travelling, and cottaging at Sandy Bay. He was a kind, gentle person whose honesty, wisdom, and dry sense of humour were appreciated by all who knew him. He is also predeceased by his mother Elsie Captain, his father Isaac Main Captain, and his parents-in-law, Fred and Ethyl Lytle. Friends are invited to join in a celebration of his life on Friday, January 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

I knew the Captains as friends-at-the-lake. Only now that I am back at the lake did I learn of Tom's passing. I didn't know him well but appreciated his gentle smile and his determination to stay active as long as possible. My empathy to you, Muriel, and the family. I hope to see you again on the crescent. I was very saddened to see that Tom had passed away. I lived two houses down the road on good old Rannock Avenue as a kid in Charleswood and I always remember Mr Captain having a particularly good sense of humour. I too was referred to as 'tiger' when I was a kid and just the way he said it somehow made me feel kind of good, which no doubt was Mr Captain's intention. I barely new Pat and Cathy but James is only a couple of years older than I. It was typical of James as well to have a great sense of humour as I fully expect he has to this day. Tom Captain was a nice man and surely unforgettable to all who were lucky enough to have known him. Sincere condolences - Howard Craig (Australia) on behalf of the Craig family. - Posted by: Howard Craig/Craig Family. (Neighbours) on: Apr 19, 2015

Remember Mr. Captain as always pleasant, mild mannered man. Tom & Muriel often stopped to chat on their evening walks down Miramar. Heartfelt sympathies to Muriel, Cathy, Patty and Jamie and families. - Posted by: Pam Black-Rose (Former Neighbour) on: Jan 13, 2015

Apparently, I met Mr. Captain as a newborn on Conway Street in Winnipeg where we were neighbors. Our family kept in touch with "The Captains" over the years, visiting them often in Charleswood (Pepperloaf Cres). I remember Mr. Captain helping my father with the electrical work in one of our homes in Winnipeg, which was probably a very good thing. The twinkle in his eye when he always referred to my younger brother as "tiger", will always be remembered. Truly a wonderful and gentle person who I was always happy to see. My condolences to Mrs. Captain, along with Cathy, Patty and Jamie. - Posted by: Dave Middlestead (Family friend) on: Jan 08, 2015

Tom & Muriel were good friends of my late parents (Doris & Dave Bain). I can remember growing up and going to the Captain's house on Christmas Eve. Also remember the twinkle in Tom's eye when he was telling a joke. I remember them being at my wedding and dancing up a storm. My condolences to Muriel and the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. - Posted by: Heather Wenzel (nee Bain) (Family Friend) on: Jan 07, 2015

Tom will be missed in the neighbourhood of Zeglinski Crescent. His daily walks to wave and talk to whoever was out will always be with us. His quick wit and humour were always with him. We always remember that Beryl and Muriel walked the bays daily and we would ask him, how come you don't go with them. He said they were doing the race track and doing what women do gab. A good memory Tom! He was a very kind man and we often referred to him as "the salt of the earth". Rest in peace Tom you were a good man. Condolences to Muriel and family our thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Kim & Peter Turcotte (Neighbours/Friends) on: Jan 07, 2015
