MARY SHYMKO May 1, 1921 - January 8, 2015 With sadness, we say goodbye to Mary, a beautiful mother, daughter, wife, sister, aunt, baba, great baba, and friend. Living a full and rich life of 93 years, Mary will be remembered for her steadfast love of family and friends and having an encouraging word and smile for everyone. She passed away January 8 peacefully at Holy Family Home. She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Tom (Sally); Walter (Elaine); Nick (June); Caroline Hurak (Jerry) and Darleen Cherniak. Mourning their dear Baba are grandchildren: Sheri (Blake) Russell; Tammy (Grant Smith) Shymko and Tracy (Chris Hemstock) Shymko; Brent, Blair and Mark (Carrie) Shymko; Nadine (Jay) Wright; Larissa Gilchrist; Amy Cherniak and Kelly (Matt) Saper. She was blessed to be a great-Baba to Annika Russell, Bethany, Adam and Nate Shymko, Emily and Samantha Wright, and Owen and Isobel Gilchrist. Left to mourn are her sister, Christine (Tom) Pidborchynski and sisters-in-law, Martha Shymko and Jean Shymko. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Peter Shymko; her parents, John and Maria Spuzak; sisters Joyce McCaughey, Ann Rawluk, Rose Kosteck and son-in-law, Craig Cherniak. Mary was born in Silver, Manitoba where she later farmed with Peter for 31 years. She was an active supporter of St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Silver and later the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Gimli being involved in the women's league, cantoring and being a member of the Gimli New Horizon's Choir. She loved singing, gardening, bird watching, cooking, baking, playing cards and carpet bowling. When she moved to Winnipeg she enthusiastically enjoyed all the activities her apartment complex offered. She was a great treasure to her family and lived actively independent well into her 93rd year. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 13 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, 35 Marcie Street, Winnipeg officiated by Very Rev. Fr. Gnutel. Fellowship will follow the mass at the church hall. Following the lunch, interment will take place at the St. John Cemetery in Silver at approximately 2:30 p.m. Pallbearers are nephews: Gerry Pidborchynski, Gordon Rawluk, Walter Kosteck, Curtis Shymko, Kelly Shymko, and grandson, Brent Shymko. Honorary Pallbearers are Mary's grandchildren whom she adored. The family extends sincere gratitude to the staff at Concordia Hospital, Misericordia Cornish 5 and Holy Family Home for the loving care they gave Mary in her last months. Flowers are kindly declined. Donations may be given to The Dream Factory or charity of your choice. Mom thank you for being the most wonderful mom a child could have. My prayers for love and support go out to the family. Aunty Mary touched me and a lot of people with her kind and loving ways. I have such good memories spending my summers and winters on farm with all the friends and family with Aunty Mary and Uncle Pete. They always had an open door with open arms . One of my childhood memories is visiting uncle Pete's and auntie Mary's farm in Aborg. I always looked forward to having aunty Mary's doughnuts .i so enjoyed them. Everytime I look at my uncle Pete or aunty Mary I would a smile on their face . They played I such a big part of my younger years and I will miss them dearly And like i said I loved aunty Mary's.
